The Gambit Movie Has Been Shelved

The Gambit Movie Has Been Shelved
Gambit comics

Earlier today, Disney announced a lot of new release date information, which included three new Star Wars movies being slotted and both the Avatar sequels and The New Mutants being delayed. But there was one movie conspicuously absent from the updated Disney calendar: Gambit. Yes, it appears that after years in development hell, Gambit has finally been shelved.

Ever since Gambit was officially announced back in 2014, five years after Taylor Kitsch played the first live action incarnation of Remy LeBeau in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it’s been repeatedly been delayed, and when last we heard, it was supposed to come out on March 13, 2020. However, now Disney has acquired 21st Century Fox, and rather than continue that studio’s pattern of pushing Gambit back, the Mouse House has opted to just take the movie off the board entirely.

Barring some surprise announcement later down the line, the five-year saga of attempting to give Gambit his own solo movie has ended. That’s a shame for Channing Tatum, who’s been attached to play Tatum since Gambit officially entered development. Maybe he’ll find another opportunity to play a superhero down the line, but throwing energized playing cards is not in his future.

Even if Disney had been willing to still release Gambit, there’s no way it would have been ready to go by that March 2020 date. Following the departures of Rupert Wyatt, Doug Liman and Gore Verbinski over the years, Gambit had still not found a replacement director. The movie also changed a lot from how it was originally conceived, but alas, we won’t get to see this particular tale unfold.

Gambit’s removal, as well as the cancellation of all the other X-Men spinoffs in development, further signals the end of the X-Men franchise that began in 2000. Dark Phoenix is wrapping up the main X-Men film series next month, and while Disney is insistent that we’ll see The New Mutants next year, it’ll likely just be a standalone tale rather than spawn sequels.

The only thing that will be staying the same when it comes to Marvel’s mutant properties is Deadpool, as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently said that there are no plans to change the Merc with the Mouth. But other than that, it’s believed that the X-Men franchise will be rebooted to fit within the Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity, although it will be a while until that happens.

Maybe there’s a future for Gambit within the MCU’s forthcoming X-Men adaptations; just because he was never able to star in his own movie doesn’t mean he can’t be an important player in ensemble pieces. Regardless, fingers crossed that someday there’s a book written about all the effort that went into trying to get the Gambit movie off the ground.

The Lion King Official Trailer Adds Some Humor To Simba’s Stunning Savanna

The Lion King Official Trailer Adds Some Humor To Simba’s Stunning Savanna
Simba, Pumbaa, and Timon in The Lion King

The Lion King is one of the most popular animated movies Disney has made to date. It's almost a foregone conclusion it will be one of the studio's most popular remakes. A brand new trailer for the CGI spectacle is now here, and while it contains a lot of epic moments you'll remember from the original, it also provides us with some laughs, in the form of fan-favorite sidekicks Timon and Pumbaa. Check it out.

The trailer gives us a couple of new voices compared to the last one. Previously, the only voice we heard was James Earl Jones' which, considering he was in the original film, was something of a cheat. Now we hear Chiwetel Ejiofor for the first time as Scar. It's certainly a very different voice than that of Jeremy Irons, but no less menacing. We also get to see, but not hear, other characters like the hyenas, Nala, Zazu, and, of course, Simba himself.

Then, at the end, we hear Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen for the first time, as the voices of Timon and Pumbaa. The pair are performing a chorus of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," which I guess means this is our first chance hearing any of the music in The Lion King, even though this probably wasn't the song people were waiting for.

Timon and Pumbaa sang the same song in the original Lion King as well, and seeing what we've seen before is pretty much what this trailer is all about. While some of the dialogue that we hear in the trailer isn't identical to lines from the original, many of the images are. We see Scar telling Simba to run away, and the hyenas chasing him as he does. We see Simba, Timon, and Pumbaa, walking along together in single file profile, one of the most iconic images from the animated classic.

While people certainly have fond memories of the original version, and are going to want to see their favorite parts in the remake, I certainly would like to see a little something different in the remake that will set it apart from the original, not simply have it be a complete retelling of the story as we already know. There's still plenty of space for such things to fit in between the scenes we love, and the classic moments are going to be what draws in a lot of the audience, but it would be nice to see something a little new in the trailer.

Either way, The Lion King is almost destined to be a hit. It will be the third Disney remake of 2019 following the recently released Dumbo and the upcoming Aladdin, but with a movie as popular as this one remake fatigue seems highly unlikely.

The new Lion King arrives in July.

Bohemian Rhapsody Has Now Made Queen Richer Than The Queen

Bohemian Rhapsody Has Now Made Queen Richer Than The Queen
Bohemian Rhapsody Queen standing in the street together

It’s a saying that’s thrown out to symbolize the ultimate in largess. “They have more money than the queen.” Well, in the case of rock group Queen, fittingly enough, they can make that claim rather truthfully from this moment forward. And they can thank the biopic Bohemian Rhapsody for their ability to do so.

Thanks to the runaway hit success of the Academy Award-winning story of Freddie Mercury and his bandmates' rise to the top, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon are all estimated at being worth £445 million, which is roughly $583 million in U.S. currency. Considering how much Bohemian Rhapsody made, it’s not all that surprising that their wealth should jump so high. For comparison, Queen Elizabeth II is currently worth £370m, which translates to about $484.6 million.

On the basis of the film’s success as a theatrical product, the $902.5 million international grosses against the $50 million production budget make Bohemian Rhapsody something of a megahit. With Rami Malek’s performance as Freddie Mercury giving the film a lot of good notices, and the fan reaction to the film being overwhelmingly positive, the monetary success of the film alone would only be the start to what’s fueled the surviving members’ fortunes to rise.

Not to mention that the film is now the highest grossing musical biopic of the world! With a successful musical movie comes even more successful ancillary markets, both in merchandising and record sales. Undoubtedly Bohemian Rhapsody’s success in theaters had folks walking out of the theater, humming their favorite Queen songs on the way to their cars and eventually primed to buy their favorite albums, as well as any sort of merchandise they feel can show their fandom for the film.

Let's also remember that with Bohemian Rhapsody’s title track becoming the most streamed song in the 20th century, that’s certainly a mark of success that is only another feather in Queen’s cap. It’s certainly the sort of success that would make a musical act keen on replicating that sort of success, and you can imagine how this news will make the band keen on jumpstarting talks for that proposed sequel that has been flying around ever since Bohemian Rhapsody first took off.

This news has been announced ahead of its publication in The Times’ annual “Rich List,” which will be running in the upcoming Sunday edition. And after the results putting Queen ahead of Queen Elizabeth II, it might be a good idea for the royal sovereign to get a good agent and start cashing in herself.

Maybe with the right sort of wrangling, the Queen could get herself a piece of future seasons of Netflix’s The Crown. Maybe she could even try to put together her own package for an authorized biographical film, starring a Hollywood talent that could lead it to awards and monetary glory.

Certainly if England’s greatest musical acts can do it, then so could Queen Elizabeth II herself. That is, if she’s even bothered by this news in the first place. With a new grandson freshly brought into the world, and the duties of being England’s queen still on her plate, this may not really matter to her. Any way the wind blows, this is amazing news for Queen, and probably an interesting footnote in history for The Queen.

Bohemian Rhapsody is available on home video and streaming in all major formats.

Christina Hendrick’s Toy Story 4 Character Sounds Super Creepy

Christina Hendrick’s Toy Story 4 Character Sounds Super Creepy
Christina Hendricks as Gabb Gabby in Toy Story 4

For a family-friendly franchise all about the cute, adorable and fluffy toys of our childhood, Toy Story has featured some rather spooky characters. Remember Babyface from Sid’s room in the first film? What am I talking about, of course you do – that character’s creepy face is likely singed into the brains of everyone who watched it, especially if you were a kid.

Soon Toy Story 4 will introduce a completely new generation to the emotional damage that comes with being a neglected toy, when Christina Hendricks’ new character Gabby Gabby debuts on screen. The Mad Men and Good Girls actress will be a vintage ‘50s doll who comes complete with a heartbreaking backstory and her own army of dolls to scare the children of today into sticking with video games for good. Here’s what the movie’s director Josh Cooley told Entertainment Weekly of the character:

She can just tell her henchmen of ventriloquist dummies to do her bidding for her, and they do. She’s like the Godfather, where she doesn’t really have to do much to do a lot.

Did I say Toy Story can be creepy yet… because chills. Some of the most powerful villains can just sit back and watch her followers do the dirty work for them, and that looks to be exactly what Gabby Gabby does with the ventriloquist dummies Woody will meet in Toy Story 4. The pull string doll has apparently been collecting dust in an antique store for more than 60 years, and never been held and loved by a child because she was made with a broken voice box.

Because she has a defect in her voice, she sympathizes with the silent ventriloquist dummies and speaks on their behalf. Therefore, they seem to follow her every beck and call without batting an eye. Why did the filmmakers decide to include these eerie dolls in the upcoming Toy Story movie? Josh Cooley said this:

I’ve always loved The Twilight Zone and that Talking Tina-type of thing. We’ve never seen creepy, old dolls like that in Toy Story, and this was an opportunity to do that.

Gabby Gabby and her ventriloquist army will join some of the other villainous characters in the Toy Story universe such as Prospector, Lotso, Emperor Zurg, Sid and Big Baby. Have no fear, the new Pixar film is also introducing a slew of other new characters who seem a bit more delightful.

Keanu Reeves will play Duke Caboom, a Evel Knievel-type daredevil who will assist Woody and Bo Peep in their mission. Key and Peele will play carnival stuffed animals named Ducky and Bunny and the tiniest toy in the franchise Giggle McDimples will be played by Ally Maki. Toy Story 4 heads to theaters on June 21… on the same day the Child’s Play remake will be released. Coincidence? With Gabby Gabby on board, maybe not.

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge Has Blue And Green Milk But Which Is Better?

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge Has Blue And Green Milk But Which Is Better?
Luke Skywalker drinking green milk in Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge is a new land that is all about making you feel like you're standing on an alien world in the galaxy far, far away. You get to fly in Star Wars spaceships. You can craft Star Wars weapons and droids. You can shop in an alien marketplace. However, one thing that Disneyland is especially known for is innovative and interesting food and drinks, and Galaxy's Edge is no exception.

A number of culinary delicacies have been created for guests to try, but if you're a serious Star Wars fan, then none may be quite as important as the beverages you can find at the Batuu milk stand.

From the moment Luke Skywalker sat down to breakfast in A New Hope, fans have wondered exactly what that blue concoction he was drinking actually was. The food and beverage team at Disney Parks have come up with their best approximation of that, as well as the green liquid Luke Skywalker pulled right from the source in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The two drinks don't have special names. They're known simply as "blue milk" and "green milk" and are both available in a single place inside Galaxy's Edge, a location known simply as the milk stand. Both types of milk go for $7.99, so they're not cheap drinks, to be sure, but that's honestly pretty standard for a non-alcoholic specialty beverage at Disneyland.

What Exactly Is Blue Milk And Green Milk?

So, first and foremost, the most important thing to know is that neither of these drinks is technically milk. Both are beverages with a rice and coconut base rather than coming from any form of actual dairy. This is done largely to simply allow more people to enjoy the drinks. Both of them are vegan, so everybody from vegetarians to the simply lactose intolerant can still have a glass.

The drinks also are not quite the same consistency as milk. Both are closer to a milkshake than milk, or, since both have strong fruit flavors, maybe calling them a smoothie is more accurate. Either way, pouring blue milk on your morning breakfast cereal wouldn't simply change the color of your breakfast, but everything about the meal.

Blue Milk

Starting with the iconic blue milk made famous in Star Wars: A New Hope, this icy cold beverage is going to hit all your buttons, especially if you're a fan of tropical fruits. It's got flavors of pineapple and dragonfruit, but also watermelon. If you're looking for something cold and refreshing to drink on a hot day in Southern CA and there will be a lot of those this summer, or on Batuu, the blue milk is probably going to be much more your speed.

My guess is that the blue milk will be the favorite among most guests as it's something of a safer choice. The other option is a bit more adventurous.

Green Milk

Green milk is also very much a fruit smoothie, though the fruits here are quite different. The green option is very heavy in the citrus flavors -- think oranges and grapefruits above all. There's a bit of tropical fruit here as well as I think there's passion fruit also included.

This could have made the green milk the more popular choice overall, but green milk has a bit of a twist. In addition to these citrus flavors, there's also a strong element that I can only describe as floral tasting. It comes in at the back of the sip and is very strong. Because of this, it's the flavor that is still lingering after you swallow, making the green milk the more unique taste of the two.

This will be the determining factor in which of the two you like better. These floral notes are either going to appeal to you or they're going to turn you off in a big way.

So Which Is Better?

Going in I sort of assumed this would be an easy enough question to answer, but as it turns out, not so much.

Personally, I have to say I actually enjoyed the green milk more. I found the floral notes of the beverage to be quite interesting and unexpected and I love any food or drink that combines flavors I like in unique and interesting ways.

Having said that, it seems, based on those who have given both milks a try at Galaxy's Edge, that I'm very much in the minority. Odds are you will prefer the blue milk over the green. I can totally see that many might not go for the floral component of the green milk. It's not the first flavor you think of when you think "ice cold fruit smoothie."

The best comparison that I can come up with comes from the world of beer. What's often referred to as a "west coast IPA" is a beer that is usually heavy in hops and thus is more bitter. It certainly has a strong flavor to it, but it's one that doesn't appeal to everybody.

Green milk isn't bitter, but it has a strong flavor in the same way. You're either going to like the taste or you're going to hand the glass to your friend and see if they want to finish it.

Blue milk is more like your session IPA. Its flavors are smoother and more balanced. It's easier to drink. It's designed specifically to appeal to a wider variety of palettes.

If you're going to be checking out Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge and you want to try something at the milk stand, my recommendation is go with the blue milk first. If you're there with a group of friends, consider getting one green milk among the group so that everybody can at least give it a try. There's a decent chance somebody will like it enough that it won't go to waste, and if everybody loves it, you can always get more.

You can still check out Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge now by booking a stay at a Disneyland Resort hotel, everybody booked in the room will get access to a four hour visit to Batuu. Starting June 24, no reservations will be required.

Jumanji 3 Evolves Karen Gillan's Character In A Kickass Way, Jack Black Teases

Jumanji 3 Evolves Karen Gillan's Character In A Kickass Way, Jack Black Teases
The Rock Karen Gillan Jack Black Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Jumanji 3, or the direct sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle -- whatever you prefer to call it -- is now filming for its December 2019 release. The 2017 stars are back for the new as-yet-untitled movie. During a break from filming, and still in their characters' avatar outfits, Jack Black (Professor Sheldon Oberon) had co-star Karen Gillan (Ruby Roundhouse) on his Jablinski Games YouTube channel. Gillan played Crash Bandicoot while Black failed to get her to spill Avengers: Endgame spoilers. After she mentioned the game she was playing felt a little like Jumanji, Black offered some praise for Gillan's role in the new movie:

Also, I should say that Karen is kicking ass in the new Jumanji. Your character has evolved and now you've got more stuff and rad stuff to do this time. I can't say what, because that would be spoiler alerts.

Karen Gillan was flattered by the praise, and did some Britney Spears singing -- which you should watch in the video -- but she wasn't so flattered that she was willing to share Avengers: Endgame spoilers on what Nebula does next.

It's good to hear Karen Gillan's game avatar Ruby Roundhouse will have more to do in Jumanji 3. How does she evolve? Is there like a game upgrade that gives her more powers? Does she take over as leader of the group? It doesn't look like she gets a new outfit. Both Gillan and Jack Black were in the clothes we're used to seeing from their first movie. Kevin Hart also showed off a look from set showing his usual attire:

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has also been keeping fans updated on the Jumanji shoot, sharing set photos from the end of a week's filming:

We don't know the plot of Jumanji 3 at this point, but it's bringing back most of the cast from Welcome to the Jungle. That includes Nick Jonas, plus the actors who played the high school kids. This sequel has also added Awkwafina, Danny DeVito, Danny Glover, and Dania Ramirez (so far) in mystery roles.

This is considered the third Jumanji movie because it continues the thread started with the Robin Williams Jumanji movie in 1995. His character was referenced in Welcome to the Jungle. The third movie is meant to be more tied to the second movie than the original, but they are all part of the same universe.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle took on Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 2017 and made some major money in the process. So Jumanji 3 appears to be trying for the same trick -- it's currently scheduled to open December 19, just a few days before Star Wars: Episode IX. Here's what else is headed to theaters in busy 2019.

Marvel Updates Avengers: Endgame Poster After Leaving Out Danai Gurira’s Name

Marvel Updates Avengers: Endgame Poster After Leaving Out Danai Gurira’s Name

It's an exciting day to be a Marvel fan. With Captain Marvel officially in the rear view, all eyes are on what will go down when The Russo Brothers' Avengers: Endgame arrives in theaters next month. The MCU can be a bit more forthcoming with footage now that audiences have met Carol Danvers, and the studio debuted a final trailer and new poster for the Endgame today.

The fans have been pouring over every frame of the new Endgame trailer, in an attempt to figure out what The Russo Brothers have in store for us. The new poster was also epic, but the public (myself included) noticed one thing missing. While Okoye is featured in the group shot, Walking Dead star Danai Gurira's name wasn't listed with the rest of the starring cast. In fact, she was the only actor on the poster that was left out. But Marvel has already updated the poster, and released another that prominently features Gurira's name, check it out:

As you can see, Danai Gurira's name was added to the end of the list next to Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula in the Guardians of the Galaxy. Bradley Cooper and Josh Brolin each get special credits with their characters' name, which puts them behind Gurira's name. But now Okoye is as featured as the rest of the surviving heroes, who will fight back against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.

All of the trailers for Avengers: Endgame have been void of the characters who died as a result of Thanos' finger snap of death (aka The Decimation). While the fans assume that the affects of the snap will be reversed eventually, Marvel Studios is advertising an upcoming blockbuster with a focus on the survivors. All of the OG Avengers failed to fade to dust, alongside a few supporting characters including Black Panther's Okoye and M'Baku.

This new Avengers: Endgame poster once again proved how Marvel truly hears the rabid fanbase. Rather than ignoring feedback or backlash, the studio has largely adjusted in order to ensure the droves of moviegoers who see each movie are happy. There were quite a number of tweets about Danai Gurira's lack of billing on the first poster, so the studio quickly correct itself. Furthermore, the new post indicates it was an error, and Gurira was always supposed to be credited as such.

It is important to note that while Danai Gurira's name wasn't at the top billing alongside (literally) everyone else on the poster, she wasn't totally ignored. The first draft featured her name at the bottom of the Avengers: Endgame poster, alongside the rest of the credits. But the visibility of the actress' name was noticeably different, which is why some fans took umbrage with the poster.

Okoye and Wakanda haven't been especially featured in the Avengers: Endgame trailers, so it should be fascinating to see how the technologically advanced society is faring in the wake of The Decimation. With T'Challa dust, the country is in need of a ruler. But who could be on the throne? Shuri? Okoye? M'Baku? And with the heart-shaped herb seemingly destroyed by Killmonger in Black Panther, it's possible that the powers of the panther could be lost forever.

All will be revealed when Avengers: Endgame arrives in theaters on April 26th, complete with Danai Gurira's Okoye. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Avengers: Endgame Red Carpet Censors Gwyneth Paltrow After Slipping Up With A Spoiler

Avengers: Endgame Red Carpet Censors Gwyneth Paltrow After Slipping Up With A Spoiler
Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts in Avengers: Infinity War

If you’re a part of a superhero movie, then you always need to be careful about not revealing spoilers ahead of release. The cast of Avengers: Endgame, though, have had to work extra hard not to accidentally reveal anything to the public, and despite trying hard not to do so, Gwyneth Paltrow, a.k.a. the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Pepper Potts, accidentally let something slip, requiring the Marvel censors to get involved.

Gwyneth Paltrow was one of the many celebrities to attend the Avengers: Endgame world premiere yesterday, and while on the red carpet, she was asked about her final day of shooting, i.e. when she knew the endgame was indeed the endgame. She responded:

I have an indelible moment from filming. I don't know if it was the actual last day, but we were all together and shooting at this beautiful, on this beautiful lake in Atlanta, and it was amazing to be with everybody. The casts of multiple movies all at the same time...

The actress then looked to Iron Man director and Happy Hogan performer Jon Favreau and asked him if she could say that, prompting him to answer, “I don’t know,” which then led to her saying “Oh shit!” This moment can still be seen on the video presenting the full Avengers: Endgame red carpet event, but if you watch the video highlighting just Gwyneth Paltrow, the part where she mentions the casts of multiple movies has been cut out.

It’s obviously common knowledge that Avengers: Endgame has a stacked cast, from the original six of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to the likes of Captain Marvel and Ant-Man. However, Gwyneth Paltrow’s comment reveals that there will be a moment in Endgame that has the largest collection of MCU characters together ever, something that not even Avengers: Infinity War delivered last year.

How will this be accomplished? It likely involves all the characters who were dusted at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. All of those actors have played coy about whether or not their characters will actually be brought back to life, but it’s basically a given that most, if not all of the dusted heroes will be brought back, namely because folks like Spider-Man and Black Panther have sequels on the way. Once you throw them into the equation, such a huge gathering is possible, though that doesn’t make it any less cool to see on the big screen.

In the grand scheme of things, Gwyneth Paltrow’s comment is a minor slip-up at best, but Marvel doesn’t take any chances. The studio has been very keen on revealing as little as possible about Avengers: Endgame, to the point that Scarlett Johansson said that the press tour was making her lose sleep out of fear she said something she wasn’t supposed to.

It’s also worth noting that this isn’t the first time time Gwyneth Paltrow has dropped a potential Avengers: Endgame spoiler. Last year, shortly after Avengers: Infinity War came out, she noted that Tony Stark and Pepper Potts' relationship evolves to the point that they’re married and have a child. We already knew that the couple had nuptials on the calendar, but evidently these two will also be parents when we reunite with them.

All we know about Avengers: Endgame for certain is it will see the surviving Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy and other heroes banding together to try and undo the genocide Thanos unleashed with the snap of his fingers. Their initial plan to accomplish this is to steal the Infinity Stones from the Mad Titan and harness their power for themselves, but we have no idea if the protagonists will be successful doing this, let alone what else is in store for the movie.

Avengers: Endgame finally bows in theaters on the evening of Thursday, April 25, but rest assured that we here at CinemaBlend will have plenty more coverage of the movie in the weeks to follow. For now, you can learn what the MCU’s future looks like by looking through our handy guide.

How Much John Wick Chapter 3 Made Opening Night

How Much John Wick Chapter 3 Made Opening Night
Keanu Reeves and Halle Berry in John Wick Chapter 3 parabellum

The newest entry in the Keanu Reeves action franchise John Wick is here and if the opening night numbers are any indication, John Wick is going to assassinate the entire domestic box office. The movie brought in just short of $6 million last night, setting it well on the way for what is likely to be a $40-$50 million opening weekend.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum brought in $5.9 million in Thursday night previews. That's more than double what John Wick: Chapter 2 did in 2017, as that film "only" brought in $2.2 million. That's an impressive number not only because it's a franchise best, but because, as an R-rated movie, the film has a more limited audiences than your normal PG-13 blockbuster. John Wick: Chapter 3 out did both of the last two James Bond movies in Thursday night numbers, which had a much wider reach due to the lower rating.

Deadline is projecting a $50 million opening weekend for John Wick 3 which is up from the $30-$40 million that was being projected only a couple of days ago. Either way, it looks like Parabellum will be the movie to finally defeat the Avengers. Endgame is projected to bring in $30 million this weekend, which will still be good for second place more than likely, but it looks like the Avengers reign at the top of the box office will end with three weekends.

If John Wick: Chapter 3 does win the weekend, it will set another record of sorts, as it will be the first time that Mr. Wick has held that position. Neither of the previous two films ever won a box office weekend, though both were still able to become quite successful.

The first John Wick movie finished its box office run with just over $40 million domestic and just under $90 million worldwide. John Wick Chapter 2 finished up at $92 million and $171 respectively. If Chapter 3 is able to keep its Thursday night pace going, it will very easily become the first of the franchise to break the $100 million mark domestically.

When combined with international numbers that would virtually guarantee that this franchise isn't going anywhere, and considering that pretty much everybody involved in the series is happy to just keep making these movies until the fans give up, that may be exactly what is going to happen.

The only other new releases for the weekend are the romantic drama The Sun is Also a Star and A Dog's Journey. The dog movie is looking at an opening in the mid-teens while Star will likely open in with less than $10 million. At the same time, both were much smaller movies all around and thus still have the potential to be successes in their own way.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum will likely have trouble keeping its own box office crown after this weekend. Disney's remake of Aladdin is set to debut next weekend, which will almost certainly put the House of Mouse back on top of the box office.

First Sonic The Hedgehog Trailer Gives Him Wild New Powers

First Sonic The Hedgehog Trailer Gives Him Wild New Powers

Studios have continued to try and crack the code of turning video games into movies the way they have with comic books and the result has been films with a lot of different looks and styles. Now, we have one of the most popular video game characters ever getting his first big screen adventure and it's...interesting, to say the least. Check out the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog and see what the blue speedster can do in a world of humans.

Of course, the movie starts showing off just how fast Sonic is, that's his whole gimmick, but here Sonic apparently can move so fast that he goes full Quicksilver in a sequence where the world around him appears to be standing still. Even Sonic doesn't usually go quite that fast.

In addition to that, we see a sequence where the famous gold rings that Sonic collects in the video game can apparently be used as portals that transport Sonic's human friends from on place to another. i guess now we know why he picks so many of them up.

Sonic is a character born in the 1990s and that vibe permeates the trailer. Possibly not more so than in seeing Jim Carrey's version of Dr. Robotnik, which is born from a very old school Jim Carrey performance. It feels like something out of an Ace Ventura movie and to be honest, I can get behind that. It's certainly not the version of Dr. Robotnik I was expecting, and I'm not sure what it means to the film as a whole, it may not really work, but if you're a fan of old school Jim Carrey, it's nice to see.

For those fans a little thrown off by Carrey's look, the end of the trailer gives us a version of Robotnik more in line with the classic video game version, though how one becomes the other we don't know.

For fans of the classic video game, there are plenty of fun references in the trailer. The Paramount logo is scene surrounded by gold rings. James Marsden's police officer is a resident of Green Hills, a reference to the first level of the original Sonic the Hedgehog video game. Even the film's tagline about every hero having a "Genesis," is a cute reference to the Sega video game console on which Sonic had his best adventures. Possibly his only good ones.

The plot of the film is a bit vague based on the trailer. Sonic needs to "save the planet" though it's not clear here from what. Robotnik appears to be chasing Sonic, not the source of whatever Sonic is trying to save us from so what that is we don't really know.

Sonic the Hedgehog fans were more than a little concerned when the first posters came out for the new film. The character's look was a little disconcerting. I'm not sure this trailer is going to alleviate anybody's fears. It's a little over the top and Sonic still looks, odd. Having said that, Sonic has been portrayed as being full of attitude in pretty much all of his incarnations so this isn't all that out of line even if it seems a bit much.

Sonic the Hedgehog hits theaters in November.

Why It Was Terrifying Pitching Toy Story 4 To Tom Hanks, According To The Director

Why It Was Terrifying Pitching Toy Story 4 To Tom Hanks, According To The Director
Woody in Toy Story 4

With the way things ended in 2010’s Toy Story 3, it’s no wonder a lot of folks thought that movie marked the end of the adventures of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the gang on the big screen. However, nine years later, they’re back for Toy Story 4, which was directed by Josh Cooley, who’s been part of Pixar since he worked as a storyboard artist on The Incredibles.

Tom Hanks, on the other hand, has been playing Woody for over two decades, so when it came time to pitch what Toy Story 4 would be about, Josh Cooley was terrified because he was worried about whether or not Hanks would approve of the story. Cooley recalled while speaking with CinemaBlend’s own Sean O’Connell:

I know that I was nervous to give them a pitch of the story for the first time, a pitch of what was ultimately the story we were going to make. In fact, when Tom came up to Pixar and he was like, ‘Okay, what's going on? What's happening here?’ Because we had already been working on it for a couple of years already. And so I said, ‘Well here, I'm going to give you a picture of everything we're doing.’ And you know, it's Tom Hanks. He's been doing Woody for 25 years. And so I was just kind of naturally thinking, ‘Geez, I hope he likes this idea because that would be nice.’ … I got through the pitch to [scene where] Bonnie's in a classroom and she's sitting there alone and Tom said, ‘All right, you got me. Okay.’ He goes, ‘I don't know how you guys are doing this. You got me already!’ That was a huge kind of a relief. I felt like he was totally engaged.

So it turned out that Josh Cooley didn’t need to worry about if it’d be difficult impressing Tom Hanks with Toy Story 4, as he was captivated relatively early into the storytelling process. And things would only get more engaging for Hanks from there, because before he went in to record his lines, Woody’s voice actor got some texts from Buzz Lightyear’s voice actor, Tim Allen, warning him about the emotional ending.

Speaking of Tim Allen, Josh Cooley noted that he had a similar reaction as Tom Hanks’ hearing the pitch for Toy Story 4. In the director’s words:

The same thing happened with Tim. Our first session, I walked him through the story and he's laughing and really having a great time listening to it. I respect those guys so much that it was just such a relief to hear them and see them kind of light up and be thrilled to be part of it.

While Toy Story movies have always been filled with colorful characters, Woody and Buzz Lightyear have been the main players since the beginning. Judging from the Toy Story 4 trailers and marketing, it doesn’t look like Buzz will be lacking for things to do, but it’s been teased that the movie will change Woody in a major way. If Tom Hanks had a difficult time reading his final lines as the character, then I can only imagine how many tears will be shed when people see Toy Story 4 on the big screen.

It should be noted that while the possibility of a Toy Story 5 hasn’t 100% been ruled out, it seems like Toy Story 4 stands a better chance of being the definitive end to this franchise, at least movie-wise. There’s also the fact that in the coming years, Pixar will be releasing only original movies rather than sequels, so even if the Toy Story saga could continue, it would be a long time before it would be picked back up. So be prepared for the chance that you’ll be saying goodbye to these characters for good come next month.

Toy Story 4 opens in theaters on June 21, and for those of you curious about what movies will be coming out afterwards, you can find that information in our 2019 release schedule.

Ron Howard Responds To Solo Sequel Campaigns

Ron Howard Responds To Solo Sequel Campaigns
Qi'ra and Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story

You may have noticed yesterday that #MakeSolo2Happen was trending on Twitter and wondered what exactly was going on. Well, it all has to do with a fan campaign to get a sequel made to last year’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. Fans of the film took to social media to express their love for Solo, how deserving it is of a sequel and desire to see that happen. This outpouring of support was so prominent that even director Ron Howard noticed and took the time to respond:

Short and sweet. Ron Howard’s response on Twitter shows that the campaign to make Solo 2 happen spearheaded by Star Wars News Net’s Resistance Broadcast podcast has caught his attention And he can’t help but smile over this show of love for his movie. He doesn’t address whether or not he actually wants to make a sequel himself, but his smiley face response indicates that he supports the campaign and the idea of a sequel overall.

Following Solo: A Star Wars Story’s disappointing box office, Ron Howard said things that made it seem like he was disappointed that more people didn’t see the film in theaters that his cast and crew worked so hard on. He expressed a belief that if more people gave it a chance, they would find that they liked it. It was the kind of thing that made you feel bad for him, whether you liked Solo or not.

It can’t feel good to have audiences not respond to your work, especially if it's not even give it a chance. So this has to make the director proud, seeing that despite what the box office returns might tell you, people did see Solo and many that did really loved it. Solo connected with people in such a way that many are actively supporting the idea of it getting a sequel.

Unfortunately, while this is a cool thing and it’s nice for Ron Howard to get to see how much people loved his movie, the campaign’s hopes for success seem slim.

Ron Howard made the best of a bad situation, taking a production with many behind-the-scenes woes and made a watchable, entertaining movie out of it. Many of the things working against Solo, like marketing, release date and fan discontent over Star Wars: The Last Jedi, were not Solo’s fault, nor Ron Howard’s. It probably deserved a fairer shake. Nevertheless, Disney is a business and Solo underperformed.

A sequel to Solo: A Star Wars Story would presumably be way cheaper and have far fewer troubles, but Lucasfilm seems to be moving away from these kind of solo character stories. The future seems to be in fewer films, spread further apart and separate trilogies, versus the Marvel approach of character solo movies.

You can never say never though. Alden Ehrenreich was signed on for more than one movie and the upcoming Disney+ platform would theoretically open up another avenue for this story to continue. Although I still cringe over how Han got his last name, there are still dangling plot threads, like Qi’ra and Darth Maul from Solo: A Star Wars Story that I would be onboard to see explored in a sequel. There is clearly some fan interest, but is it enough?

The next film in a galaxy far, far away is Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, in theaters on December 20. Check out our 2019 Release Schedule to see all of this year’s biggest movies and let us know in the poll below if you want a sequel to Solo.

How Star Wars’ Creature Team Ended Up With Chewbacca’s New Movie Look

How Star Wars’ Creature Team Ended Up With Chewbacca’s New Movie Look
Chewbacca's full look in Solo: A Star Wars Story

Bringing any Star Wars creature to life on the big screen is a bit of a challenge, but you might think that bringing back legacy characters such as Chewbacca might be a little bit easier thanks to their already being previous work to work off of.

You’d be wrong.

Speaking at Star Wars Celebration, creature designer Neal Scanlan discussed the myriad challenges to bringing Chewbacca back for Disney and Lucasfilm’s new series of Star Wars movies. The way the team ended up with Chewbacca’s new movie look took ideas, plenty of perseverance, and honestly, a whole lot of luck. But don’t take it from me. Here’s what Neal Scanlan revealed.

Finding The Actor

First and foremost, finding an actor who could play Chewbacca was incredibly difficult. You need someone who can embody the character, but also someone who is 7 feet tall to take on the role. There are definitely more 7-foot basketball players out there than working actors. Or, as Scanlan put it, perhaps George Lucas got really lucky when he found Peter Mayhew:

So the first thing about Chewie that we realized was that if you were George Lucas and you created this character called Chewbacca, what you really want is for someone to walk through your door who’s 7 foot plus, has incredibly wideset, beautiful eyes and a very strong jawline. How lucky was that for George when Peter Mayhew walked through the door?

Obviously, Joonas Suotamo (who is allegedly 6’ 11”) was signed on for the role and that particular problem was worked out for the design team. However, there was a bigger issue at the heart of creating Chewbacca—they didn’t have any of the original plans or molds for the character.

Designing Chewbacca’s Look

Neal Scanlan said at Star Wars Celebration 2019 that he and his team were confident they could get Chewbacca’s look close to that of the original trilogy movies, which came out between 1977 and 1983. However, he and his team quickly found out the process was “hopeless” and they were never going to get a fully accurate look for the character.

Then, the team got really lucky. Per Neal Scanlan:

Then almost at the point where we just tried to give up, I had a sculptures working. We were trying to reverse engineer: What does Chewie look like underneath? A colleague of mine walked in, he said, ‘I have something for you.’ I thought he’d probably brought me a can of beer or something. He said, ‘I have an original cast of Chewbacca’s head.’ I was like, ‘You’re kidding me!’ He was like, ‘No, I did a little bit of work experience with Stuart Freeborn and he gave me a cast of Chewie’s head.

So, they went from having a lot of trouble trying to figuring out exactly how to nod to the past to having Chewbacca’s full facial look in the blink of an eye. Scanlan also noted about that particular bit of luck that it was one a great day for himself and his team.

That day was an amazing day for us because it literally allowed us to then go ahead and make Chewie with a likeness knowing that likeness was exactly like what Stuart Freeborn created.

Getting Chewbacca To Look As Furry As Possible

If you are a big fan of Star Wars, you may already know the original costume was knitted for Chewbacca with a combination of yak and rabbit hair for the original trilogy. However, when Neal Scanlan’s team was designing the look they at first felt as if that would be damned near impossible to replicate. Again, it took a little tinkering, but Scanlan and co. finally realized knitting was the only way to go. He said at Star Wars Celebration:

The second thing was the original Chewie suit was knitted by Stuart Freeborn’s wife. She actually knitted it! I said to [my team], ‘This is insane. We can’t knit the suit.’ But actually what we realized was she didn’t knit it because that was the only way they could do it, she knitted it because that was the perfect way to do it. Because [there’s] something about the way a wooly jumper moves and a wooly jumper stretches.

It isn’t easy to get a Chewbacca suit that looks and moves like the original. Neal Scanlan also told audiences that each hair is “placed in and knotted” one at a time. Ultimately, six or seven people were tasked with working on one Chewbacca suit, and even then a suit takes six months to complete. Six! The end result looks stellar, but it is very furry, and actor Joonas Suotamo has previously revealed some days on set it resulted in an unavoidable and uncomfortable temperature rise. Per Suotamo:

On interior sets there might not be any real airflow and the hairs would just trap all the heat to the fur and cause a slow temperature rise. While filming I would perform my bit and we would go again many times – usually this would take from an hour to 2 hours. On scenes requiring 3 hours I would sometimes need to start conserving my energy.

There are always tough puzzles doing creature work. We learned during the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi that there were over 180 creatures created for that movie -- a number of large magnitude. In general, Star Wars movies are large scale productions. The flicks not only create actual, fully formed creatures but often construct sets rather than relying on CGI to make the films come across as realistically as possible.

It's not just Chewbacca that has been fully formed for the new movies. Neal Scanlan also talked more about the sea cows which had to be transported by helicopter to come to life this weekend, so the attention to detail given to this franchise is really unparalleled.

With that in mind, it's not shocking to now know each Chewbacca suit took six months to come together.

Still, if you’re wanting to get into some legit Chewbacca cosplay, you have quite the challenge ahead of you. But if you’re happy to admire Chewie from afar, you can catch the creature designed character back in action when Star Wars Episode IX hits theaters this December. Theater Accidentally Screens R-Rated The Curse Of La Llorona Instead Of Detective Pikachu

Theater Accidentally Screens R-Rated The Curse Of La Llorona Instead Of Detective Pikachu
The Curse of La Llorona movie poster

Movie theaters are busy places with a lot of moving parts, so it's to be expected that mistakes will happen. However, one recent theater error may have left lots of children scarred for life when instead of a screening of Detective Pikachu, an audience comprised largely of children, was subjected to The Curse of La Llorona and all the trailers that went with it.

The situation started when Ryan George went to a screening that was supposed to be Detective Pikachu. As one would expect, the theater had a lot of kids in it. They, and their parents, probably began to wonder when the first thing to happen after the lights went down was a trailer for a movie that those kids really didn't need to be subjected to. As George said on Twitter...

The theatre I'm in is playing a trailer for Annabelle Comes Home before Detective Pikachu LOOK AWAY CHILDREN OH NO

The children did not look away. As one might expect, this did not go well. If this had been a random mismatch of a trailer and had been an isolated incident, things probably would have been ok. However, it was not. The next trailer to run wasn't much better.

Andddd kids are crying. Now the Joker trailer is playing.

I can imagine at this point the parents might have been more upset than the kids. I can imagine very young children looking forward to Detective Pikachu simply being more confused by the Joker trailer than anything. Parents, however, were probably quite disturbed.

If you guessed that the terror did not end there, you'd be correct.

NOW IT'S CHUCKY OH NO CHILDREN OH NO

Yeah, the killer toy probably went over really well with both the kids and their parents. I can imagine.

Of course, as it turned out, the random horror movie trailers stuck in front of Detective Pikachu were actually just symptoms of a bigger problem, as the theater had actually mis-scheduled the screening and was actually playing Conjuring-verse movie The Curse of La Lorona instead of the Pokemon movie.

OH MY GOD THEY'RE PLAYING LA LLORANA INSTEAD OF DETECTIVE PIKACHU

At some point, the mistake was realized and the movie was shut off, at which point the entire audience was moved into another theater that had, one assumes, started playing Detective Pikachu accidentally, as the new audience found the film waiting for them.

We've all been moved to another theatre where Detective Pikachu is just paused? At least there aren't any more murders on-screen

One certainly hopes they started the movie over from the beginning once the audience was seated.

With modern theaters it's now incredibly convenient to move any given movie to any screening room where it's needed with just a couple presses of a button. There's no need to physically move reels or even a disc. However, if those buttons are pressed in error, you can end up giving kids nightmares.

Maleficent 2 Just Got Pushed Way Up In The Theatrical Schedule

Maleficent 2 Just Got Pushed Way Up In The Theatrical Schedule
Angelina Jolie as Maleficent

It took a long time to get a sequel to Maleficent off the ground and while it's been half a year since the project wrapped filming, it was still going to be more than a year before the movie hit theaters, with the film set to release in May of 2020. However, this morning Disney revealed a few small pieces of very interesting information. One was the film's official title, and another was a brand new release date that moves the film way up the calendar. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is now coming out this year, on October 18, 2019.

Why This Release Date Is A Big Change

When release dates for movies change, it's almost exclusively delays. When films do have their release pushed up, it might be by a couple of weeks, or at the most a couple of months. Seeing a movie jump more than a year up the calendar is unusual.

From a post-production stand point it's probably not an issue. The film is still coming out more than a year after filming wrapped. The bigger issue with the release date move is that Disney is moving Maleficent: Mistress of Evil into an already very crowded year, one that's been made crowded mostly by Disney itself.

This will make Maleficent: Mistress of Evil the fourth Disney live action remake -- or in this case, sequel to one -- coming out this year alone. Dumbo hits later this month, then Aladdin in May, The Lion King in July, and now Maleficent in October.

And that's just the movies based on previous animated material. 2019 is a huge year for Disney, from Captain Marvel arriving this week, to Avengers: Endgame to Frozen II to Star Wars: Episode IX, the House of Mouse is going to have no problem bringing in a massive box office this year, The studio didn't exactly need the help.

Having said all that, there is something of a gap in that schedule, as Disney didn't have anything on the calendar between August's Artemis Fowl and November's Frozen II so it's not like Disney will be cannibalizing its own box office here. And a pre-Halloween release date for Disney's biggest villain isn't the worst idea in the world. Nothing of note was set to release that weekend. Zombieland 2 and the animated Addams Family movie are set to hit the weekend before.

Maleficent 2 Also Got A First Look

In addition to the title and release date, a poster for the new film was also released. Check it out below.

The Title Calls Back To Sleeping Beauty

In Disney's original Sleeping Beauty Maleficent refers to herself as the "Mistress of All Evil." While the title calls back to that, don't expect Angelina Jolie's character to be too evil. She's not technically the villain of the story. That role is reportedly been taken by Ed Skrein.

Although, the use of the title with the new release date makes one wonder if the new movie will be something closer to horror than the original. It's certainly setting itself up to imply a very dark movie.

The success of the original Maleficent is largely responsible for the influx of live-action remakes that Disney has gone all-in on. The movie was a smash hit. The sequel will also be a return for Angelina Jolie who hasn't been on screen since the year after the original Maleficent came out. If fans are still hungry for the character or the actress then we could see yet another big hit in what is already going to be a year of big hits for Disney.

Tom Holland Warns Of A Spider-Man: Far From Home Scene That Will Be An Emotional Punch In The Face

Tom Holland Warns Of A Spider-Man: Far From Home Scene That Will Be An Emotional Punch In The Face
Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Far From Home

Jon Watts’ initial Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming, was more emotional than you might remember. Yes, it had its lighter moments, and inspirations from the high school classics delivered by John Hughes. But there were tough, emotional beats in that movie as well, which Watts and leading man Tom Holland weren’t afraid to embrace and wallow in. And it sounds like they are back at it in the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home.

CinemaBlend recently traveled to the London set of Spider-Man: Far From Home and watched the creative team work. During a sit-down conversation with Tom Holland, we brought up complicated scenes from Homecoming that really stuck with us, from the scene of Peter Parker pushing himself out of the rubble – a direct callback to The Amazing Spider-Man No. 33, “The Final Chapter” – to his verbal standoff with Michael Keaton in the car outside of Liz’s dance.

We asked if Spider-Man: Far From Home includes tense, emotional moments similar to these, and Holland immediately opened up, stating:

There’s a scene in this film where audiences will feel like they were punched in the face. Even filming it, I remember walking out and then watching it again on the monitors and asking Jon, ‘Are you sure that's okay?’ And he's like, ‘No, it's not. People are going to hate this scene.’ But it really… God, it’s pretty crazy. And it's very similar in the way that it's very tense, and it sort of rips the rug from underneath your feet. It's pretty awesome.

Now that is a tease. Tom Holland couldn’t come close to giving us any more context about the scene he is discussing. At the same time, Holland was pretty guarded during the whole visit, because when he sat down to discuss Spider-Man: Far From Home, none of us had yet to see Avengers: Endgame. That movie didn’t even have a title yet. And as far as we knew, Spider-Man was dust.

Naturally, now, we know that he’s back… and if you saw Avengers: Endgame, you know how he comes back! The latest trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home sort of shows how he is going to pick up the pieces following Endgame, so why don’t we let that teaser tell the story:

In Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) needs to take a break from that superhero lifestyle, so he agrees to accompany his classmates on a European jaunt. Only, once there, he gets caught up in a series of global attacks that are being investigated by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and a new ally, Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal).

As much as Spidey wants to sit this one out, Fury and Beck need his assistance to take down Elementals – creatures that are from another dimension, or multiverse, and could cause real problems for the world at large.

Spider-Man: Far From Home swings into theaters on July 2. Stay here on CinemaBlend for a lot more coverage from our visit to the movie’s set.

The Batman’s Filming May End Up Being Delayed

The Batman’s Filming May End Up Being Delayed
Batman comics

While the DC Extended Universe is embarking down a different path than what was initially planned, one of its most popular heroes isn’t going anywhere. The Batman is still chugging along, and while someone else will be taking over the Caped Crusader role from Ben Affleck, it remains one of the DCEU’s most highly anticipated projects. However, delivering exceptional products takes time, and in The Batman’s case, that could result in another filming delay.

Back in March, writer/director Matt Reeves, who’s been attached to The Batman since early 2017, said that it looked like the movie would start rolling cameras “around year’s end.” Now Variety’s Justin Kroll has heard that some script changes might result in that launch date being pushed back a bit. He wrote:

It’s taken a while for The Batman script to come together, as Matt Reeves was still busy with War for the Planet of the Apes when he first boarded the project, and he also re-wrote it from scratch to allow for more creative freedom. The script is closer than ever to completion, but polishing up the story is part of the game, and moving back production by just a couple months isn’t too big of a deal.

However, The Batman delaying production isn’t set in stone just yet. If these script changes don’t end up taking too much extra time, The Wrap reporter Umberto Gonzalez has heard that filming is set to begin on November 4 in London. So The Batman is still gearing up to finally begin principal photography, the question now is whether it will be unfold pre or post-Christmas 2019.

Of course, even if The Batman begins production within the next year, it’ll still be a long journey for the finished product to arrive. The movie isn’t being released until summer 2021, and while there are a few DCEU movies before then to keep fans entertained, it’ll have been four years since Ben Affleck’s Batman made his final appearance in Justice League. Still, it was a seven-year wait between Batman & Robin and Batman Begins, so this isn’t as bad.

Ben Affleck Confirms He's Done Playing Batman

In any case, it sounds like we’re still in for a long wait regarding who will inherit the Batman mantle from Ben Affleck. All we know for certain is that a younger actor is being sought to put on the cape and cowl, and that Matt Reeves reportedly wants someone famous. It’s also worth clarifying that even though this Batman will be younger, The Batman is not an origin story akin to Year One.

Beyond that, Matt Reeves revealed that The Batman will a noir-driven story that highlights the eponymous protagonist’s detective skills, which weren’t prominently featured in previous Batman movies. He also noted that many members of Batman’s rogues gallery would appear, with The Penguin reportedly among them.

The Batman will cast its shadow over theaters on June 25, 2021, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates. In the meantime, you can look through our DC movies guide to find out what else is coming down the DCEU pipeline.

All The Planet Of The Apes Movies, Ranked

All The Planet Of The Apes Movies, Ranked
Charlton Heston as Taylor and Linda Harrison as Nova in the final scene of Planet Of The Apes

Before The Avengers, before Harry Potter and even before Star Wars, there was the Planet Of The Apes series. Starting with the original in 1968 and now up to its ninth film in the series, War For Planet Of The Apes, the series was one of the first major franchises in movie history.

Sure, there had been some long-running B-horror movie franchises and a handful of other examples in other genres – most notably James Bond - but Planet Of The Apes was basically the first one that set the template for what we understand to be major franchises, like The Avengers and Star Wars.

All told, there have been books, graphic novels, a TV show, toys and video games based on the series, just as there are for modern franchises. There are also nine Planet of the Apes movies that make up the franchise, though unlike some of the major franchises, the nine are separated into three distinct versions of the story and there isn’t a linear story to all nine. But, with that said, let’s get into which of these movies is the worst, which is the best and which ones fall in between.

9. Planet of the Apes (2001)

Tim Burton’s remake was supposed to be a hit. It had fans of the long-forgotten series, which had not released a new film for almost three decades, salivating at the thought of what the great Tim Burton could do with the world they loved. Surely his unique way of looking at things and his distinct style of filmmaking was perfect for a remake. After all, his Batman movie in 1989 reinvigorated that franchise.

Instead, sadly, this Planet of the Apes movie was a total disappointment. The whole project was in production hell for years before Tim Burton and his crew would take it on, casting Mark Wahlberg as a human astronaut that goes forward in time thousands of years and ends up on the Planet Of The Apes. Tim Roth plays the villain and Helena Bonham Carter stars as the love interest of sorts.

The plot is a time-traveling mess and it’s hard to follow, but it ends with Marky Mark somehow going back in time to what he thinks is his own time, on what looks like his Earth, until he looks up and sees Tim Roth’s ape character sitting on the chair in the Lincoln Memorial. So… it’s even further into the future? Who knows.

8. Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)

Battle For The Planet Of The Apes was the fifth and final installment of the original series. It was made on a shoestring budget and it shows. Even the reviews of the day said it felt like the franchise was on its last legs.

The film opens in the future, but tells the story, in flashback, of how Caesar, played by Roddy McDowell, after the war of Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes, attempts to rebuild the world. His human foe, Kolp, leading what is left of the human population, rises up against Caesar and the Apes, and after some serious fighting, peace is made between the apes and the humans.

The movie, like its predecessor, Conquest, is meant to be a comment of racial equality, but also like its predecessor, it is little too on the nose and a little ham-handed.

7. Beneath The Planet Of The Apes (1970)

Beneath The Planet Of The Apes was a hastily thrown together sequel of the original 1968 movie, and it shows. Like a lot of direct sequels to big movies in the '70s and '80s, it sort of doesn’t fit into the larger narrative. Though it does end in the nuclear explosion that does create the post-apocalyptic world that would drive the events of Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes.

Charlton Heston does briefly return from the original, though his role is significantly smaller, as the story follows another astronaut, Brent, that followed Heston’s character, Taylor, to the planet to rescue him. Roddy McDowall, who plays Cornelius in the original movie, is absent from this one, again showing that the big picture wasn’t in play here, as his character would become very important to the story arc in the future movies.

Beneath The Planet Of The Apes a good enough movie, but it really lacks the broader vision that would come with the following movies. It’s just sort of a cut and dry simple sequel that quickly tries to follow the main story of the first movie and the bigger picture, including the weird telepathic humans that don’t really have much of a larger role in the following movies.

6. Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes (1972)

Conquest Of The Planet Of The Planet Of The Apes is the first time fans of the series would meet a fully grown Caesar. The character Caesar is perhaps the most famous character in the series, as he played a pivotal role in the end of the original five films and is the hero of the reboot series that began in 2011.

Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes follows Caesar, who was born to Cornelius and Zira in Escape From The Planet Of The Apes, which was set in the 1970s. In Conquest, set in the early 1990s in America, Caesar is living as a circus performer, hiding his ability to speak and his intelligence with his handler, Armando.

Caesar is tracked by Kolp (who is also fully introduced in this film) and is eventually captured, but he escapes after he avoids execution. Caesar leads the apes in rebellion against the humans, and at the end he shows his mercy and makes a speech declaring peace and his desire to see apes and humans live together, a theme that was continued in Battle.

5. Escape From The Planet Of The Apes (1971)

Escape From The Planet Of The Apes is when the series really starts to put together a larger story, and it all sort of happened as a happy accident. Due to budget constraints, the film was set in 1971 New York City, so it wouldn’t require elaborate sets and costumes like the previous two.

Roddy McDowall returns to the fold as his character, Cornelius, and his wife Zira escape the apocalypse of Beneath on Taylor’s spaceship and land in current-day New York. At first they are welcomed, but, as would become a recurring theme in the series, they're eventually discriminated against once it is revealed that Zira is pregnant with Caesar.

Escape From The Planet Of The Apes begins the larger story of how the apes came to dominate Earth in the future and the genesis of intelligent apes. Like all the movies, it’s a little cheesy compared to today’s movies, but the story has vision, which was not only new for the Apes movies, but also movies on the whole. The first true sci-fi franchise was really born with Escape From The Planet Of The Apes.

4. Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes (2014)

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is the second entry in the rebooted trilogy that starts with Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes. It explores the beginnings of the conflict between the newly intelligent apes, led by Caesar, played by the absolutely amazing Andy Serkis, against what is remaining of the human population after the Simian Flu that gave increased intelligence to the apes and all but completely wiped out the human population.

All three films in the rebooted trilogy are excellent and Dawn is no exception. Going back the first one, Rise, one of the smartest things the creators of the new series did was ground the origin story of the Caesar and the smart apes in true science fiction. Instead of a simple story that starts with a time-traveling astronaut, they base the genesis of the smart apes on biotech and simple evolution. It’s a great choice.

Unlike the original Planet of the Apes series' first sequel, it’s clear from this sequel that the larger story has been more fully fleshed out from the beginning. While much of Dawn deals with the internal conflicts among the ape population, particularly Caesar and his rival Koba, the big picture conflict with the humans is at the heart of it, as Caesar wants to live in peace, but Koba sees no option but war. Like the original series, the reboots serve as a commentary for race relations and equality.

3. War For The Planet Of The Apes (2017)

The final installment (for now) of the new trilogy, War For The Planet Of The Apes is a tremendous conclusion to the Caesar story and the origins of the “new” planet.

War For The Planet Of The Apes is also filled with nice references to the original series, like the twist of having Caesar’s son named Cornelius, rather than Cornelius being the name of Caesar’s father in the original series. Caesar also rescues a mute woman named Nova, which is a nod to the original character Nova from the first movie, who is also a devolved human.

The plot of the film is driven by great performances by Andy Serkis again as Caesar and Woody Harrelson as his human antagonist, the evil Colonel. War continues the broader themes of equality by using The Colonel as human obsessed with killing the evolved apes rather than live in harmony, and this eventually leads to Caesar being forced into a position that he didn’t want to take: a violent uprising against The Colonel and his men.

2. Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes (2011)

The reboot of the Planet Of The Apes series was an instant classic. Unlike its two successors, Dawn and War, it is light on pure action, at least until the end, and it is strong as an origin story. Like most great science fiction, the story is based somewhere near reality.

In Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, viewers learn about a drug that James Franco’s character, Will, is developing to treat Alzheimer’s Disease. Testing for the drug is being done on apes. One of the apes is Caesar’s mother, and when she is exposed to the drug, her intelligence increases dramatically. However, she also loses control and is shot, but not until after she has given birth to Caesar, who inherited his mother’s intelligence.

Will takes Caesar home and continues to secretly develop the drug for his father, who is suffering. Eventually, Caesar begins to understand the larger world and his low standing in it as a primate, and after attacking Will’s neighbor, he ends up in monkey jail, which further steels his resolve to rise up. He does finally lead a revolution and the movie ends with Caesar and the rest of the apes escaping to the Redwood forests of Northern California, setting up the conflicts of the future.

1. Planet of the Apes (1968)

The one that started them all is still the best. Sure the original Planet Of The Apes is a little campy and it’s not nearly as slick or as good looking as the reboots, but it is the one that first grabbed people with the amazing story with the incredible twist.

The first time anyone sees the movie, especially if they don’t know the ending, it digs deep into the viewer’s imagination. The twist, when Charlton Heston’s character Taylor sees the top of the Statue Of Liberty and realizes that he is in fact trapped in the future and that the fate of humanity is doomed, is just brilliant. It’s the kind of story that sticks with audiences for a long time. It’s frankly one of the most iconic scenes in movie history.

Planet Of The Apes deserves its place at the top of the list because obviously without it, there would be no list. It has its drawbacks, like how the special effects are primitive (no pun intended) by today’s standards, but that doesn’t matter. It’s the story (and that twist) that matter. Charlton Heston’s performance is great, as is Roddy McDowall’s as Cornelius. It’s a movie that everyone should see at least once and probably way more than that.

So that’s the list. We hope there are more Planet of the Apes movies in the future, but in the meantime, what do you think? Let us know in the comments and answer the poll below!

Original Suspiria Writer Is Not In Love With The Remake

Dario Argento created a memorable monster when he committed Suspiria to the screen in 1977. As the writer/director of the famed horror film, you can imagine how attached he is to one of the film’s that he’s best known for creating. With that in mind, one would assume that the 2018 remake from director Luca Guadagnino would get under his skin more than a little bit.

But as it turns out, the reason Argento is upset with the remake is for artistic reasons than incendiary ones, as he called the film out for specific behaviors. In particular, he had the following critiques:

To me, the remake of Suspiria doesn’t look like a well-realized project. It lacks fear, music, tension, and scenic creativity. Films like Get Out and Hereditary have struck me for their beautiful photography, their plot, and their production.

Now while that isn’t a sick burn in the measures of our times, Dario Argento’s criticism of the new version of Suspiria definitely strikes hard. Rather than being just a couple of colorful remarks of displeasure that could have easily been fun and personally rewarding, Argento has actual artistic claims to make on 2018’s well-received and certainly WTF redo.

In particular, the criticism of Suspiria 2018 lacking the most vital components to both a horror film, as well as any film in general, is a dressing down that‘s devastating, while carrying significant weight. Though it’s certainly something that can be disputed, as again, the public response to Luca Guadagnino’s version was quite favorable. With a 66% on Rotten Tomatoes when all was said and done, much of the critical community seemed to enjoy the fresh, modern take on Dario Argento’s storied classic.

Even our own Eric Eisenberg, upon seeing Suspiria’s remake for himself, had the following raves to offer:

Dario Argento's original will forever be recognized for its breathtaking cinematography and insanely bold use of color, and while Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria molds its own aesthetic, it's no less jaw-dropping. And this is true within the film's many different modes. Simply moving through the dark halls and vast spaces of the academy is a haunting experience; while the cinematography and choreography for the dance sequences are exquisite and elegant while also fierce and violent.

But alas, Dario Argento wasn’t taken with 2018's Suspiria, and that’s just the way it is. Rather than just blindly rubber stamp or trample the film into the ground though, he had valid concerns that he voiced in his conversation with Interview Magazine. Agree or disagree, no matter what the MPAA has to say on the matter, it’s a solid thought.

Of course, you can compare and contrast for yourself, as the 1977 version of Susperia is available on home video in a brand new 4K restoration, and can also be streamed on Tubi. As for the 2018 version, you can catch it now on home video and on Amazon Prime’s streaming catalog as of May 3.
