Anna Paquin Has Never Seen X-Men: Days Of Future Past

Anna Paquin Has Never Seen X-Men: Days Of Future Past
Rogue and Logan in Days of Future Past

Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC live-action universe were battling for box office supremacy, Bryan Singer's 2000 hit X-Men broke new ground by proving the genre could be both profitable and popular. The X-Men property is still going strong today, with fans looking forward to the upcoming release of Dark Phoenix. The First Class and original trilogy collided with the ambitious X-Men: Days of Future Past, combining both casts of characters into one massive blockbuster.

Days of Future Past arrived in theaters back in 2014, and was a multi-tiered story that took place in both a dystopian future and 1973. While X-Men fans were happy to see so many familiar faces in one movie, one major mutant got left on the cutting room floor: Anna Paquin's Rogue. While she eventually got her scenes restored in the home video Rogue Cut, it turns out that Paquin has never seen the movie-- either version. As she recently revealed:

Truthfully, I haven't actually seen either [version]. Hey, everyone with newborn twins who sits down and watches films for their own pleasure, raise their hand. Not me.

Despite being an OG member of the X-Men franchise, it looks like Anna Paquin hasn’t seen her most recent appearance, and the finale to her trilogy’s story. But she’s got a good excuse, as she was still a new mother when Days of Future Past arrived in theaters.

Anna Paquin’s comments to EW about missing Days of Future Past mentions she had recently given birth at the time the blockbuster was released. Paquin and her husband and True Blood co-star Stephen Moyer had twins Poppy and Charlie Moyer in 2012, with the challenge of two babies proving too distracting for the actress to tune into Days of Future Past. And considering how her small role was ultimately cut from the theatrical release, the movie must have been even further from her mind.

While X-Men: Days of Future Past was a brave and bold part of the X-Men franchise, in the end it's just another gig for Anna Paquin. And when things in her personal life needed attention, she became less invested in the comic book property. Rogue hadn't factored heavily into the narrative since back in The Last Stand, so you can't blame Paquin for moving on with her life, while still being open for another cameo.

Rogue's role in Days of Future Past wasn't revealed until the film came out for home release, and the Rogue Cut arrived. After Logan lashed out and injured Ellen Page's Kitty Pryde, the future characters needed Rogue to relieve her. But they had to break her out of a mutant prison first, with Iceman and Magneto doing the honors, and reuniting her with the rest of the group. Iceman even perished in the process, giving him a death separate from the mass execution in the film's third act.

Ultimately, Rogue'e scenes weighed down Days of Future Past's already long runtime, so she ended up on the cutting room floor. Luckily Anna Paquin didn't seem too heartbroken, and her scenes were eventually made available to the fandom anyway. While the character became less vital to the story as the franchise lives on, Rogue's role in the first X-Men franchise was integral to the main plot, and the conflict between good and evil.

It should be interesting to see how Rogue functions onscreen once the deal between Disney and Fox is official. Rogue hasn't been part of the First Class franchise, which is set to continue with the upcoming release of Dark Phoenix. While she hasn't been seen onscreen in a number of years, that might change once the X-Men are adopted into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Comic book fans are eager to see the mutants finally appear in the massive shared universe, although smart money says Disney will be rebooting the property, rather than simply incorporating the existing cast into the MCU.

This potential outcome is a bummer for fans who have followed the X-Men franchise for nearly two decades, but it opens up a ton of narrative possibilities for the titular team of Marvel heroes. Marvel Studios will get a fresh start at iconic characters like Wolverine, Cyclops, Magneto, and (hopefully) Rogue. Fans of Anna Paquin's signature X-Men character know that she's got a quite different origin in the comics than what was portrayed onscreen, so the MCU could break new ground and show a new side to casual moviegoers.

In the comics, Rogue is the adopted daughter of Mystique, who was trained to be a villain. Professor X eventually calls out to her, and she joins the X-Men and becomes a beloved member of the team. What's more, the backstory behind her powers directly relates to Carol Danvers, the character Brie Larson is bringing to theaters with Captain Marvel.

When working for Mystique, Rogue uses her power-stealing abilities to attack Carol Danvers aka Miss Marvel (this was before Captain Marvel became the character's primary name). She holds onto Carol so long that she absorbs her Kree abilities permanently, retaining super strength, near invulnerability, and flight-- in addition to her normal power. With Captain Marvel is set to be a major presence in the future of the MCU, it would be the perfect time to give Rogue the spotlight comic fans have been waiting for her to inhabit.

Unfortunately, most of Marvel's plans after Avengers: Endgame are a mystery. With the exception of Spider-Man: Far From Home, it's unclear what the future of the behemoth franchise holds. Fox and Disney's merger adds extra uncertainty to the situation, with the X-Men franchise still moving forward with the release of Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants. Additionally, there's the Deadpool franchise to worry about as well. While Disney will no doubt keep Ryan Reynolds character alive and well, fans have worried as to whether or not they'll still be rated R. All that remains to be seen, as the general public is left to wait for official news from either camp.

The next installment in the X-Men franchise will be Dark Phoenix on June 7th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Zoe Saldana Is 'Proud' Of James Gunn And Disney For Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 Rehire

Zoe Saldana Is 'Proud' Of James Gunn And Disney For Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 Rehire
Zoe Saldana Gamora Chris Pratt Star-Lord Peter Quill Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Marvel MCU

The Guardians of the Galaxy family is back together and Zoe Saldana (Gamora) is thrilled -- she also has no hard feelings against Disney for the James Gunn situation. Not that she would share them publicly if she did, since Disney is now the Avatar star's employer on multiple fronts.

Disney rehired James Gunn as director of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, after the infamous firing back in July. While promoting her new movie Missing Link, Zoe Saldana shared love for Gunn and gratitude to Disney for the final result. Here's what she told ET:

I'm proud of him. I'm happy that he's coming back. I'm so proud of Disney, actually, that all the leaders right now behind that big corporation decided to lead by example, and spreading the word and the message of redemption is important.

James Gunn had been fired as writer/director of the movie back in July, after old offensive tweets resurfaced. Later in the same month, Zoe Saldana and fellow Guardians of the Galaxy cast members posted a statement showing their support for Gunn:

In August, there were reports that Disney would not rehire James Gunn. There was speculation about what would happen next for the film, and if Disney/Marvel would hire someone new. But no. It turns out, no one else was even considered. (Sorry, Taika Waititi.)

About two weeks ago, it was announced that Disney had rehired James Gunn, and that the decision had actually been made months ago. The announcement came after Gunn had already signed on to make DC's The Suicide Squad and that movie is still happening, and Gunn plans to work on it first, before Guardians.

James Gunn thanked everyone for their support after he was rehired, since it came as a pleasant surprise to many fans, as well as MCU stars like Zoe Saldana.

It's not clear when Guardians 3 might hit the big screen at this point, but we have some ideas. Meanwhile, it still needs to be explained how we might see Gamora again -- not to mention Star-Lord, Groot, Drax, and others snapped by Thanos in the Avengers: Infinity War Decimation. Right now, Rocket Raccoon and Nebula seem to be the last Guardians standing. But Avengers: Endgame may change all of that.

Zoe Saldana's new animated movie Missing Link opens in theaters on April 12. Saldana is also part of the multiple Avatar sequels in the works. Avengers: Endgame arrives April 26. Guardians 3, like a wizard in Lord of the Rings, will arrive precisely when it means to. Keep up with everything coming to the big screen with our 2019 movie release date schedule.

The Best Comedy Movies To Watch When You Need To Cheer Up

The Best Comedy Movies To Watch When You Need To Cheer Up
Step Brothers Dale and Brennan watching TV while eating snacks

Let’s be honest with ourselves here: sometimes life is a bit too much for even the hardest of souls. No matter the circumstances, there are just those moments where you want to hole up for a day, drink plenty of fluids, and just take some time to practice the important art of self care. Part of a good afternoon of recovering from whatever life has thrown at you is a good movie or two.

Or, in the case of the list below, several good movies that you can throw on to lighten the mood and help lift your spirits through the healing powers of laughter. Your sampler pack below ranges through the decades, and includes some off-beat selections as well as some fan-favorite titles, because we all could use some unexpected laughter in our lives.

Game Night

Absurdity is a word you’ll probably read a lot reading through this list, and that’s a good thing. Some of the best comedy movies embody that very quality, and last 2018’s Game Night is certainly no exception. The movie’s as absurd as it is laugh-filled, as a simple night of indoor gaming turns into a crime-solving comedy rampant with serious errors.

With an ensemble that includes Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams, as well as a couple of surprise appearances, Game Night takes a crime mystery and infuses it with both action and laughter. Also, Jesse Plemons steals the entire damned movie, as a security guard who’s a little friendlier than he should be, and has a big grudge against the Frito-Lay chip company.

Mean Girls

Teen comedies are pretty good at cheering people up as well, as most of the time there’s a positive message of loving oneself and trying to accept others. Though since they’re also comedy movies, there’s also a lot of antics like the ones in Mean Girls involved as well. Based off of a self-help book involving the behavior of cliques, writer/co-star Tina Fey takes a very serious subject, and not only does she give it a teen movie makeover, but she also uses a lot of her own comedic flare to make it a movie only she could have created.

Insanely quotable, and also featuring Rachel McAdams, Mean Girls is the story of Lindsay Lohan’s fish-out-of-water Cady, and her first experience with the school system in the U.S. With McAdams as her mean girl adversary, and Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert as the backup friends, it’s not easy for Cady to win their trust. But the process is extremely funny.

It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

We’re now approaching a classic entry in the comedy movie pantheon: It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. The flick is certainly a treasure to behold for anyone who has or hasn’t seen it. The movie centers its story around a bunch of cash buried in a California park, and the group of strangers who are racing against time, and each other, to get to it first. A literal who’s who of comedic legends take part in this film, with Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Jonathan Winters, Ethel Merman, Mickey Rooney, and Buddy Hackett all taking part in the festivities. So if star power is your thing, look no further.

Perhaps the strongest card this movie plays is the fact that it breaks the cardinal rule of comedy and does it in style, as this almost three-hour film is not a short and simple joke. The cast grows as large as the stunts and jokes do, and by the end of It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, the finale is something so amazingly funny, you’ll see why it’s still known as one of the best comedy movies to date.

Monty Python And The Holy Grail

Absurdity. There’s that word again. It’s something that most definitely applies to the legendary comedy troupe of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, and doubly so when discussing the group's most well-known film, Monty Python and The Holy Grail. Spinning Arthurian legend into a semi-musical, semi-animated, and very meta quest for the Holy Grail, this comedy movie is a landmark event that helped cement the group’s reputation worldwide.

Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin all-star as various members of this classic quest, and what begins as a straight medieval adventure almost instantly turns into one gigantic farce. Camelot has never been this silly, and you’ll be better for watching Monty Python and The Holy Grail.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

John Hughes always had a special gift when it came to his unique brand of comedy movies. He knew when to be sweet, he knew when to be bitter, and he always knew how people worked. Yet, perhaps one of his most upbeat products in his entire repertoire was the classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, starring none other than Matthew Broderick.

Chronicling the hijinks of a teenager who skips school one too many times during a calendar year, Matthew Broderick’s Ferris ropes his best friend Cameron (Alan Ruck) and his girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara) into a whirlwind tour of Chicago--one that includes outrunning his vengeful principal (Jeffrey Jones), and outsmarting his equally angry sister (Jennifer Grey). If you’re looking for a guy who's part spiritual guru and part Bugs Bunny, Ferris Bueller is your righteous dude.

A Night At The Opera

It’s hard to beat The Marx Brothers in the game of comedy, as even in our modern world their antics and shenanigans are still so classic that they hold up among the greats. A Night At The Opera certainly stands out among their collected works, with memorable songs and gags that keep the audience smiling long after the movie has finished. The basic plot sees one of the usual Marx Brothers staples put to good use yet again, as Groucho Marx’s lead prankster tries to win frequent collaborator Margaret Dumont’s money by investing in an opera.

That’s basically all you need to know, as your standard Marx Brothers movies will tend to use a simple plot to hang a string of jokes on. With scenes that see a very crowded stateroom ordering an obscene amount of food, and a gag that suggests that Groucho Marx really was able to bend space and time to his will, A Night At The Opera is a sure fire ticket to excitement.

The Producers (1967)

Comedy legends rarely earn their place on the first go-around, and Mel Brooks is one of those stories of fame and fortune that took a little time to get going. When The Producers was released in 1967, Brooks’ first film was seen as the sick joke to end all sick jokes. Then again, a musical supporting Hitler will always likely be an odd flex. But once the joke behind the musical became apparent to the audience-at-large, the film became one of the most classic comedy movies of all time.

With Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder putting on said musical to defraud almost all the little old ladies in New York, and Hitler being played by Dick Shawn’s hippie beatnik Lorenzo St. DuBois, The Producers was actually a comedic masterpiece that poked fun at outrage culture, cashing in on tragedy, and the insane chemistry between Mostel and Wilder. It doesn’t take long for this one to get going, so make sure you’re ready once you hit play.

Back To The Future

Most people remember Back To The Future as a sci-fi movie, what with its plot revolving around time travel and making sure Michael J. Fox’s Marty McFly still exists at the end of the day. What’s also important to remember is this Robert Zemeckis-directed film is still amazingly funny. While Marty does have to make sure he and his siblings make it out of the other end alive, he has to deal with his awkward parents too.

The biggest gag at the center of this comedy movie classic is that history may be written by the generation before us, but that doesn’t mean what they’re telling us is the truth. Michael J. Fox’s charm as Marty and Christopher Lloyd’s eccentric Doc Brown are a pairing for the ages, and the humor plays like a teen movie crossed with a sci-fi epic. If you’re willing to go down this road, go ahead and clear out a whole afternoon and watch the entire trilogy.

Airplane!

Deadpan comedy is an artform that’s just as valuable as flat out funny comedy. If you can land a joke without a smile or a laugh, it can really knock a room dead. Just ask The Zucker Brothers, as that’s what their comedy classic Airplane! did when it took the genre of doomed flight movies like Airport and turned them into comedy gold. It also helped that casting skilled performers like Julie Hagerty and Robert Hays and pitting them against seasoned drama vets Robert Stack and Leslie Nielsen was a big part of that old Airplane! charm.

The heart of this comedy movie’s ability to make a crowd erupt with laughter is the fact that its core plot revolving around food poisoning on a late night flight and the traumatized pilot who serves as its only hope of landing safely, is pretty solid as a drama. It’s just all of the comedy that surrounds that drama, disguising itself as more serious material, that makes the film work.

Happy Gilmore

One of the best comedy movies to hit theaters in our modern times is, no question, Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore. His first film after the success of Billy Madison, the film’s story is a tale as old as time, as his titular hockey player loses his temper and gets kicked out of the league, only to become a golf sensation for a very personal cause. Also, a fist fight with Bob Barker occurs, which you may or may not have known about.

Speaking of familiar faces, if you’re a Modern Family fan, you’ll be surprised to see Julie Bowen as Sandler’s comedy partner on the side of good. In fact, an amusing chunk of the movie is the pair trying to keep themselves in the game long enough to pay off Happy's grandmother’s tax debt. If you’re a comedy fan, then appearances by Christopher McDonald, Joe Flaherty, and Ben Stiller will definitely make you smile, as all three present rather interesting challenges for Adam Sandler to move past on his road to fame and security.

Dumb and Dumber

Vintage Jim Carrey is like comedic wine: always good at parties, and never gets old. Dumb and Dumber is quite possibly one of the best comedy movies of the ‘90s, as it’s aged so well it still gets the laughs it did upon its initial launch. Again, simple but agile comedy, and a basic plot, help win the day, no matter its faults.

Pairing Jim Carrey with Jeff Daniels, the film sees the two play complete idiots making their way across the continental United States in the name of love, lost luggage, and a kidnapping. Dumb and Dumber introduced the film world to the comedy stylings of The Farrelly Brothers for the very first time. It was a first impression that would last forever, and it’s waiting for you to pull its finger and watch the madness that ensues.

Step Brothers

It’s hard to have a list of comedy favorites and not include at least one Will Ferrell movie on that list. And no other Ferrell film has made the world laugh more than his collaboration with John C. Reilly in director Adam McKay’s Step Brothers. It’s a comedy movie that’s become a cultural touchstone, reigning as one of the films from the last decade or so of filmmaking that’ll probably see itself become a classic.

While the gags definitely hit some dark notes, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly come at them from an angle of such misguided glee that every joke causes a hearty, mood brightening laugh. It also helps that the supporting cast of heavy hitters like Mary Steenburgen, Richard Jenkins, Kathryn Hahn, and Adam Scott all add to the madness stew that is Step Brothers, with everyone’s unique acts shining through to create a complete puzzle of laughter.

If you’re not feeling any better after watching this list of comedy movies designated to cheer you up, then you may need to call a doctor, or switch to some stronger acting comedies on the market. That being said, the films on this list might cause you to hunt through streaming platforms or rental services to find them. But they are very much worth the time and energy, as each one brings its own brand of comedy movie mayhem in a strong fashion. So take a day off, and let yourself laugh into another world. You'll feel better if you do.

Could Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Bring Back Another Classic Character?

Could Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Bring Back Another Classic Character?
Han Solo in The Force Awakens

The past few years have been very exciting for Star Wars fans. Since Disney acquired Lucasfilm, we've seen a variety of new and exciting projects come to life. In addition to standalone films and the upcoming Mandalorian TV series, the main franchise has also continued through the sequel trilogy. J.J. Abrams kickstarted the property back up with The Force Awakens, which introduced a new set of protagonists to interact with legends like Leia, Luke, and Han Solo.

The generations of Star Wars fans were devastated by Han's fate in The Force Awakens. After mentoring Rey, Han faced his son Ben/Kylo Ren on Starkiller base. While trying to help Ben return to the Light Side, he's shockingly murdered via lightsaber, and tossed over the bridge. But after being absent in The Last Jedi, a new rumor indicates he might pop back up in The Rise of Skywalker this December.

A new report indicated that Han Solo may appear in The Rise of Skywalker, once again attempting to appeal to his son's morality. He's not going to be resurrected, but will apparently come as as vision to Kylo Ren when he's pondering his next move and looking to Darth Vader's old helmet. That's when Han will appear to Ben, and may even forgive him for his death in Episode VII.

These rumors come to us from Making Star Wars, and are unconfirmed by the Lucasfilm or Disney. Still, it's a report that will excite the generations of Star Wars fans out there. Han Solo is arguably the most popular hero in the entire franchise, and he was noticeably missing during the course of The Last Jedi. He had a meaty role in The Force Awakens, and his death was heartbreaking-- proving the new movies weren't holding their punches.

Han's possible role in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker might be able to fix a problem in the current trilogy: the trio of original heroes never got a scene together. Leia and Han got a moment in The Force Awakens, but Luke was kept offscreen until the movie's very final moments. And once Carrie Fisher passed away, it seems we'd never see the three leads in another scene together.

Of course, this rumor might not pan out, and Han Solo could very well stay dead and away from the silver screen during Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Actor Harrison Ford doesn't have much of an interest in the franchise anymore, and seems happy with how he was killed off. He wanted Han to die back in Return of the Jedi, so the 76 year-old actor may have hung up his blaster for good.

In the end, there's no telling what J.J. Abrams included in The Rise of Skywalker. Palpatine's laugh at the end of the first trailer seemed to indicate an emphasis on the past, and Episode IX will end both the sequel trilogy and the Skywalker Saga forever.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will arrive in theaters on December 20th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Might Be Introducing An Intriguing Force Power

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Might Be Introducing An Intriguing Force Power
Rey running with lightsaber in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Most of the main saga Star Wars movies have shown off new ways to harness the Force, like how Luke Skywalker was able to project himself from Ahch-To all the way to Crait in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. If a new rumor is to be believed, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will contribute to the expansion of the Force through something called “Force Flash Fights.”

It was teased during the Rise of Skywalker panel last week at Star Wars Celebration that new Force powers would be on display in the upcoming movie. Supposedly “Force Flash Fights” is likely the main power that was being alluded to, although it might be given a different name later on. So what are “Force Flash Fights”? Basically, as two Force-users are engaged in a lightsaber duel, the environment around them changes.

As Making Star Wars’ report notes, when Rey and Kylo Ren meet again during The Rise of Skywalker, both are much more powerful since we last saw them in The Last Jedi, which makes sense given that there’s a time jump. Whereas before Snoke was responsible for mentally linking the two together, apparently now they’re able to do that on their own. This time, as the two are flighting, they’re still physically in the same location, but Force-wise, the background will change to different places.

And these aren’t just any random places in a galaxy far, far away, by the way. They’ll be places that we’ve already visited in previous Star Wars movies, although no specific locations were identified. Still, considering that The Rise of Skywalker is the final chapter of the Skywalker Saga, it’d be fitting to look back at where some of the Star Wars franchise’s biggest events have gone down, even if the characters aren’t actually there.

As for how Rey and Kylo Ren end up in a “Force Flash Fight” with one another, it sounds like this could happen after that moment from the teaser trailer when Rey ignites her lightsaber, gets a running start and then leaps over Kylo Ren’s TIE Fighter as it flies towards her. She damages the ship, Kylo emerges from the wreckage and they begin this trippy battle.

However, it’s also worth mentioning that other sources that spoke with MSW say that Rey and Kylo Ren will team up against an “outside threat.” Maybe it’s Emperor Palpatine, maybe it’s the Knights of Ren, maybe it’s someone/something new that still hasn’t been revealed or even rumored, but regardless, it’s possible that if Rey and Kylo do form an alliance later in the story, they might engage in a “Force Flash Fight” with this threat.

Although this sounds like a cool way to elevate lightsaber fights up a level, given how some fans reacted to Force Projection in The Last Jedi, if “Flash Force Fights” do indeed factor into The Rise of Skywalker, I suspect that will also be met with controversy. At the very least though, seeing all these different locations flash by as Rey and Kylo Ren have their respective blue and red blades locked in combat should make for quite the visual treat if pulled off effectively.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens in theaters on December 20, and you can find out when this year’s other big movies are coming out in our 2019 release schedule.

Marvel's Phase 4 Is Already Stacked With Incredible Actors

Marvel's Phase 4 Is Already Stacked With Incredible Actors
Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home

In its near 11-year existence, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown into a vast big screen tapestry populated with great actors, from burgeoning stars to esteemed character actors to some of the most honored names in the industry. The number of Oscar winners and nominees that have been drawn to this comic book movie franchise numbers in the dozens. In short, the MCU has no problem attracting talent, and those actors paired with amazing characters have been a big part of the MCU’s success.

As Marvel moves to its next Phase post-Avengers: Endgame, the assumption is that we will be losing at least some, if not many, of the actors that have been the faces of this universe. We are still in the dark about who that will be, as we are about what the future holds in Phase 4 and beyond. But needless to say it is a sad prospect to lose the actors and characters that we’ve fallen in love with over the years.

Fortunately, Marvel has already begun casting for its future films, and past is proving to be prologue as Marvel is going after incredible actors to populate its universe in the years to come. Take a look below to see some of the top-tier talent that is either attached or in talks to join the MCU in Phase 4.

Jake Gyllenhaal

He’s been rumored to be in the running to don Batman’s cowl over the years, but regardless of whether that happens, Jake Gyllenhaal will soon be donning Mysterio’s fishbowl in this summer’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. The acclaimed actor and Oscar nominee for his role in Brokeback Mountain plays Mysterio, real name Quentin Beck, who appears to have some serious powers in the sequel film.

Yet, while the character is traditionally part of Spider-Man’s iconic rogues gallery, Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio appears to be a good guy in the trailer for Far From Home, helping fight off the Elementals. Of course, as a master of illusion, trickery and misdirection, he may be the villain behind the curtain. Either way it should give Jake Gyllenhaal plenty to chew on. If anyone is up to the challenge of following Michael Keaton’s menacing Vulture, it’s the actor from Nightcrawler.

Florence Pugh

Florence Pugh just made a splash as Paige in Fighting with My Family and will continue her breakout 2019 with roles in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women and in writer-director Ari Aster’s Hereditary follow-up Midsommar. This rising star will follow that up when she stars opposite Scarlett Johansson in the long-awaited Black Widow movie.

According to some reports, the spy action thriller will see Florence Pugh play a spy on the same level as Scarlett Johansson’s character and likely her moral opposite. We’re used to seeing Black Widow punching above her weight against aliens and such, so it will be cool to see her facing someone who equals her in skill and is essentially her mirror. Florence Pugh showed she is up for a physical role in Fighting with My Family and Marvel was savvy to bring her into the MCU while she’s on the rise.

O-T Fagbenle

He’s best known for his work on TV, but O-T Fagbenle may be jumping in to the blockbuster pond in a big way because he is in talks to join the cast of the MCU’s Black Widow solo film, according to THR. Like the plot, O-T Fagbenle’s potential role is still being kept under wraps, but he would be another great addition to a cast that is already looking stacked.

Most audiences probably know O-T Fagbenle for his role as June/Offred’s husband Luke on The Handmaid’s Tale. He shared a SAG ensemble nomination with the rest of the cast of the Hulu show in both 2018 and 2019. He also had a role in HBO’s Looking and starred in the crime drama series The Interceptor, the latter of which saw him play a customs officer who joined a top-secret narcotics unit. That's solid prep for starring in a spy movie.

David Harbour

David Harbour is becoming a regular in comic book movies in recent years. After his role in Suicide Squad, David Harbour will next be seen this weekend rocking a pair of horns in the Hellboy reboot. It seems David Harbour is trying to hit for the comic book movie cycle because the fan favorite, Golden Globe-nominated star of Stranger Things is joining Marvel’s Black Widow movie (although he’s not saying much).

It’s a mystery who David Harbour will play in the film that will follow Scarlett Johansson’s KGB spy-turned-S.H.I.E.L.D. agent-turned-Avenger. Although he is best known as a good guy thanks to Stranger Things, David Harbour could also play a pretty menacing baddie. In Cinemax’s beautifully brutal and underrated Banshee, he had a small role as a mysterious and frightening handler and torturer. Whatever he plays in Black Widow, the movie is elevated with his presence.

Rachel Weisz

The last name attached to Black Widow is Oscar-winning actress Rachel Weisz, who was nominated at this past Academy Awards for her role in last year’s The Favourite. Although she isn’t signed on yet, signs are looking good that this talented actress could join the MCU in what has been described as a “key role.” That is very intriguing and raises the exciting possibility of seeing Rachel Weisz and Scarlett Johansson playing off one another.

Whatever that role is, Rachel Weisz is undoubtedly up to the task. The actress has played in serious fare like Disobedience and The Constant Gardener, and popcorn movies, like The Mummy films and the comic book adaptation Constantine. The idea of the actress who played the crafty Lady Sarah in The Favourite in a spy film is quite the prospect and will hopefully be more than a one-off MCU appearance.

Angelina Jolie

She’s been in the video game-based Tomb Raider movies and in the comic book movie Wanted, and now action star and acclaimed actress Angelina Jolie is finally joining a superhero movie, Marvel’s The Eternals. The Oscar-winning actress hasn’t done a ton of onscreen acting in recent years, which could be a good sign for The Eternals that she was drawn to it. Angelina Jolie is a magnetic presence and huge asset to anything she is a part of.

The actress has proven her action chops many times. She can play serious and grounded roles and she also relishes the ‘out there’ characters like in Beowulf and Maleficent. I expect she may get to have fun doing the latter in The Eternals. We don’t know what role Jolie is in talks to play, but some suspect it could be the ultra-powerful Eternal Sersi (not to be confused with Cersei).

Kumail Nanjiani

Joining Angelina Jolie in The Eternals is Silicon Valley star Kumail Nanjiani. The Oscar-nominated co-writer of The Big Sick is in negotiations to join Marvel’s next cosmic franchise in an undisclosed role that would without question be his most high-profile part yet. Kumail Nanjiani has proven a hilarious and entertaining presence in TV and movies, and I’m very curious to see what kind of role he plays in The Eternals.

The MCU’s cosmic films like Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor: Ragnarok have leaned heavily into the comedy, but the early word on The Eternals is that a millennia-spanning romance will be a big part of it. So it will be interesting to see what tone it takes and what role Kumail Nanjiani, best known for his comedy work, will play in it. Maybe his character will even cross paths with his Stuber co-star Dave Bautista’s Drax one day.

These are just seven actors from three films that may be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4 slate. Needless to say this is just the tip of the iceberg, as not only do these films need to fill out their casts, but we still have James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Doctor Strange 2, Black Panther 2 and Shang-Chi to look forward to. Given what we’ve seen so far, Marvel will continue populating its movies with incredible talent.

When we begin to learn more about what Phase 4 entails after Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, we will hopefully start to hear more casting announcements and we can begin fan casting for characters that we know are coming. This is a great start though and shows that Endgame is just the beginning.

Check out our 2019 release schedule to keep track of all this year’s biggest movies and let us know in the comments what actors you would like to see join the MCU in Phase 4.

Having Adorable Dog Co-Stars Can Be A Struggle According To A Dog’s Journey Cast

Having Adorable Dog Co-Stars Can Be A Struggle According To A Dog’s Journey Cast
Henry Lau and Kathryn Prescott in A Dog's Journey

Do you ever just look across the way, make eye contact with a woofer and time just stops? What were you doing with your day again? Suddenly nothing matters, you just have to pet the dog in front of you. Now imagine that energy on the set of a movie.

It’s the ruff stuff Henry Lau and Kathryn Prescott had to deal with while working on A Dog’s Journey. When I recently interviewed the pair for CinemaBlend, they told me of this unique struggle. Here’s what Lau had to say:

That was actually the most difficult thing working with the dogs because they were just so adorable. We’d be acting, running through lines and a dog would just be looking up at you and we were just like ‘don’t pet him, don’t pet him, don’t pet him, focus, focus, don’t pet him.’

As far as workplace difficulties go, many of us would gladly trade this one for our own. This is an adorable insight into working with doggos on a movie from the 29-year-old actor. During the recent A Dog’s Journey press day, Henry Lau and Kathryn Prescott elaborated about the dynamic the dog actors brought to set. In their words:

Henry: There’s this big, big dog (called Duke in the movie) and he was just the king on set.

Kathyrn: Yeah, he was very happy to be there and giant, so it was known when Gary was walking on set.

It looks like the cast established some connections to the canine talent! Kathryn Prescott, who plays the film’s central character CJ, continued to gush about them:

I loved Phil as well who played Big Dog. I thought he gave one of the standout dog performances of the film. He’s a rescue aswell and he’d only been trained I think eight days to do all his paw stuff and all the tricks that he did. I think he knocked it out of the park.

Does the Oscars have a Best Supporting Dog Actor award? Maybe it should! Phil could go head-to-head with the pair of Belgian Malinois that Halle Berry trained with for John Wick 3. You can watch the fresh faced actors from the Dog’s Purpose sequel vouch for them in our exclusive interview below:

Kathryn Prescott and Henry Lau play childhood besties CJ and Trent, who each adopt from a litter puppies as children. CJ’s pup is the dog who has been reincarnated for over 60 years in A Dog’s Purpose, namely as Bailey to Dennis Quaid’s Ethan. The film tracks their relationship as they grow up into teens and then adults and as Bailey lives different lifetimes as CJ’s sworn protector.

Both actors are relative newcomers to the big screen. Kathryn found her breakout role as the titular character in the MTV drama Finding Carter for two seasons. Henry is a former K-pop star from the group Super Junior-m, who has recently pursued a career in acting.

A Dog’s Journey opens this weekend alongside John Wick 3 and The Sun is Also A Star. Judging from Thursday night numbers, John Wick will be the top dog. The last film in the franchise based on W. Bruce Cameron’s doggo novels was a box office success, as it made $205 million worldwide on a $22 million budget. We’ll see how A Dog’s Journey does amidst May’s packed movie season.

Detective Pikachu Has Screened, See What People Are Saying

Detective Pikachu Has Screened, See What People Are Saying
Detective Pikachu

Pokemon is a worldwide phenomenon with millions of fans but up until now, fans have only seen it in an animated form. Now, the first group of people have had a chance to see the new live-action Detective Pikachu and if you thought the film looked cute, funny, and fun, based on the trailers, it seems that the first group of critics is confirming that the entire movie is that way.

Terri Schwartz at IGN says this is the perfect movie for Pokemon fans, as it is a loving recreation of the world of Pokemon, including remarkable creature designs.

I just got out of Detective Pikachu and my first thought is OMG HOW DID THEY MAKE PIKACHU SO CUTE!!! It completely nails the world of PokĂ©mon, and just seeing their amazing live action creature designs is worth the price of admission. If you love PokĂ©mon, you’ll love this movie.

This has to be great news for fans who have been waiting for the Pokemon franchise to receive this kind of treatment. It's probably fair to say that nobody quite expected Pokemon's first live-action movie to be inspired by the video game franchise off shoot Detective Pikachu, or that the title character would be voiced by Ryan Reynolds, but as unusual as that may have seemed, from the first trailer there was a clear charm permeating what we saw.

Collider's Dave Trumbore was also among those who got a chance to see the new film last night, and if given the chance, he's ready to move in.

Just saw Detective Pikachu here in Tokyo and, man, I wish Ryme City was a real place because I really want a Pokémon pal.

The biggest question of Detective Pikachu might be just how popular the franchise is with the general public. While a generation has grown up with the pocket monsters, it might still qualify as a niche property. Of course, if enough of those fans turn out, the movie will still be a massive hit. According to Nerds of Color, those fans will be rewarded because there is plenty of nostalgia to get them excited.

Detective Pikachu is adorably funny & takes you deep into the world of Pokemon, which every Pokemon fan will appreciate. The nostalgia is real. Detective Pikachu will have you laughing & tearing up a bit too. Ryan Reynolds & Justice Smith are golden in this.

Of course, if all you're expecting is awesome Pokemon and action, you might be surprised. It sounds like the movie also has some heart to it, as Nerdist's Dan Casey admitted to getting a little emotional at parts.

Detective Pikachu is a pure joy from start to finish. It’s a heartfelt, relentlessly charming story filled with excellent worldbuilding. Plenty of deep cuts for PokĂ©mon fans. There must’ve been a grass-type in the theater because I got surprisingly misty-eyed in parts.

Pretty much every review from the recent Detective Pikachu event in Japan sounds pretty much the same. The Pokemon are adorable. The movie is funny. Really what else do you need? It sounds like this really is the Pokemon movie that fans have been waiting for. They don't have to wait too much longer, as Detective Pikachu hits theaters May 10.

Netflix Has Finally Agreed To Remove Bird Box's Disaster Footage

Netflix Has Finally Agreed To Remove Bird Box's Disaster Footage
Sandra Bullock in Bird Box

Three months ago, Netflix’s viral release Bird Box rocked the boat when Canadians recognized the movie included footage of Lac-Megantic Rail disaster, and demanded the streaming service remove the tragedy killed 47 people in 2013 from the film. After Netflix previously disagreed to do so, the company is no longer taking a blind eye to the controversy.

The streaming giant has now told The Canadian Press that they will now remove the images of the train disaster from Bird Box in the next two weeks, and will be replacing the footage with a new clip for the scene illustrating the chaos all around Europe to Sandra Bullock and Sarah Paulson’s characters before the sci-fi phenomenon that forces a group of survivors to don blindfolds hits home.

Netflix paired this announcement with an apology to the Lac-Megantic community, who have been outspoken about the potential harm the film has to family and friends to victims of the rail disaster. The town’s mayor, Julie Morin, who joined in on demanding Netflix remove the footage offered her satisfying reaction to Netflix’s new decision. In her words:

Yes, there was a delay, but I think in the end, what’s most important for me, is that we have a solution to this situation we felt was important to settle.

When requests were initially made to the streaming service about taking out the footage in Bird Box, the company responded with an apology and promise to do better in the future, but a refusal to delete the footage. Netflix cited the inability to make alterations to finished content to justify the decision.

Canada was so displeased with the rail disaster footage that the country’s parliament passed a motion asking Netflix to pay the Lac-Megantic community for their grief following the film’s release. The streaming site never seemed to address this motion, but are pulling back on their initial decision to keep the insensitive footage in Bird Box.

The same footage was also previously featured in an episode of Netflix’s Travelers television show, though the show producers agreed to remove it back in January. It’s unclear as to why Netflix took so long to comply to the Bird Box situation that angered many – perhaps the studio needed time to find a replacement clip or was waiting for the Bird Box pop culture high to wind down.

Bird Box faced multiple controversies after it was released in December 2018, including a trending Bird Box Challenge, which proved dangerous when people placing blindfolds and attempting tasks such as driving caused concern. Netflix had to issue a warning for fans to refrain from ending up “in the hospital due to memes”. Otherwise, the film was one of the streaming sites most-watched original films ever.

Did The Avengers: Endgame Trailer Tease A New Hawkeye?

Did The Avengers: Endgame Trailer Tease A New Hawkeye?
Jeremy Renner as Ronin in Avengers: Endgame

It’s been three years since we last saw Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton in action in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he’s finally back next month in Avengers: Endgame. This time around, he’s adopted a look reminiscent of his time as Ronin in the Marvel Comics, but obviously Clint is known best in both the comics and this film franchise as Hawkeye, archer extraordinaire. That said, it’s become common in the comics for multiple individuals in the comics to share the same superhero identity, Hawkeye being one of them. A new Endgame trailer dropped today, and there’s a moment that has us wondering if someone new will be taking over the Hawkeye mantle in the MCU.

What little we’ve seen of Clint Barton in the Avengers: Endgame previews so far have indicated he’s going through a particularly rough time post-Decimation. After all, he’d already retired from the superhero life at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, and after picking his bow and arrows back up during Captain America: Civil War, he was imprisoned and made a house arrest deal so that he could be with his family. But once again, he’s back in the field, this time with a drastically different costume and a mohawk. Many people have assumed that Clint’s wife and children were turned to dust along with half of all other life in the universe, which explains his new look and darker demeanor, but that has yet to be confirmed.

However, there’s one brief moment of happiness for Clint Barton in the latest Avengers: Endgame trailer, as he’s shown have a good time with a girl showing off her own archery skills. Check it out:

At the very least, this snippet highlights a happier time in Clint Barton’s life, either in the past or potentially in the future, assuming he makes it out of Avengers: Endgame intact. But this is the MCU; the smallest of moments can be teases for something bigger to come later. In this case, perhaps Clint training this young woman in archery means that she’ll take over as Hawkeye in the coming years. In other words, is the MCU bringing in Kate Bishop?

Created by writer Allan Heinberg and artist Jim Cheung, and introduced in 2005’s Young Avengers #1, Kate Bishop, who comes from a rich Manhattanite family, encountered the Young Avengers as a civilian during one of their early missions, but it didn’t take long for her and Cassie Lang, daughter of then-Ant-Man Scott Lang, to find the superhero team and invite themselves on as members. Initially Kate wore a variety of battle gear that belonged to various Marvel heroes and villains, including Hawkeye’s bow.

Although the main Avengers team demanded that the Young Avengers disband, Kate and the others refused, and when member Patriot was injured in battle, Kate blamed Captain America for he and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes not taking the time to train them. Impressed by Kate standing up to Steve Rogers, and noting that the only other person she’d seen do that to the Star Spangled Avenger was Clint Barton, Jessica Jones gave Clint’s old bow and arrows to Kate, leading to her becoming the new Hawkeye.

After Kate Bishop inherited the Hawkeye codename, Clint Barton was resurrected from the dead and had decided to wear Captain America’s uniform and shield since Steve Rogers had “died” after the Civil War conflict. Crossing paths with Clint, Kate, unaware of who he truly was, berated him for wearing Cap’s costume, noting that even though she’s going by Hawkeye, she didn’t copy his costume because that would have been disrespectful, and if Hawkeye were still alive, she would have taken a different codename too. Her words inspired Clint to go down his own path and become Ronin, and later he revealed his true identity to Kate and gave her his blessing to continue as Hawkeye. Clint would later revert to go back to Hawkeye, but Kate still holds that mantle as well, and the two have become crimefighting partners.

The MCU hasn’t delved into the concept of legacy heroes yet, but with Avengers: Endgame concluding the current iteration of this franchise and paving the way for a new era, that could change. Unlike Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner’s MCU future hasn’t really been a topic of conversation. While it hasn’t been rumored he’s done after Endgame, there’s also no indication he’ll be back for another movie or will lead his own Disney+ series. If Clint makes it out of Endgame alive and his family is brought back as well, one would imagine he’d want to return to his life of retirement. That leaves the Hawkeye mantle up for the taking, and Kate Bishop could easily fill that position, although the circumstances of her and Clint meeting would obviously be much different.

There’s also the possibility that it won’t be Kate Bishop who takes over as the new Hawkeye in the MCU, but Clint Barton’s own daughter, Lila. The problem with this theory is that the timeline, as sketchy as it is, doesn’t line up. Approximately 3-4 years pass between Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame looks to be picking up shortly after Infinity War. But even with that amount of time having passed, Lila doesn’t look like she’s old enough to be the girl in the Endgame trailer.

That said, there have been plenty of rumors that Avengers: Endgame will visit the future, and it was rumored last year that Emma Furhman is playing an older version of Cassie Lang. Given his hairstyle, Clint obviously isn’t his Ronin self in this scene with the girl, so instead, this could is a flash forward to after Thanos has been defeated and everything has returned to normal… well, as normal as things can be in the MCU. If that’s the case, then that girl could easily be a teenaged Lila, and thus there’s setup for her to become Hawkeye even further down the road.

Whether Kate Bishop, Lila Barton or someone else takes over as Hawkeye in the MCU, or if we’ll even get a new Hawkeye, just like with the other starring heroes in Avengers: Endgame, this story will be a major turning point for Clint Barton. This is clearly a dark time for him, and while he was lucky enough to survive The Decimation, there’s no guarantee he’ll make it out of this latest mission alive. Still, I’m leaning towards Clint surviving, and if even if we don’t see Jeremy Renner in another MCU movie after this, his character’s left behind a notable heroic legacy, and it would be cool for a young woman, whoever she may be, to step in and continue where he left off as part of a new generation of heroes.

Avengers: Endgame opens in theaters on April 26, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for continuing coverage. In the meantime, look through our Marvel movies guide to learn what’s lined up for Phase 4 and our 2019 release schedule to learn what other movies are coming out later this year.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum Reviews Are Up, See What Critics Are Saying

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum Reviews Are Up, See What Critics Are Saying
John Wick and his loyal canine companion

At a glance, 2014’s John Wick could have easily been mistaken for a standard revenge flick that, other than its likable star, would be completely unremarkable. Yet, in one of the most pleasant surprises of recent years, John Wick turned out to be a stylish and original movie with riveting action that took full advantage of the talents of Keanu Reeves. Then in 2017, John Wick: Chapter 2 avoided a sophomore slump and proved this property has franchise potential.

Now John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum arrives to make it a trilogy. The first two films were critical successes and the reviews for the third just dropped. So did director Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves make it 3 for 3? CinemaBlend’s own Mike Reyes certainly thinks so, he gave Parabellum 4 stars out of 5 in his review, praising how the film delivers what we want and expect, while expanding the lore. Mike said:

Combining slick, brutal action, a devilish sense of humor, and an intriguing world that becomes more familiar (yet more mysterious each time), John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum delivers the goods yet again.

Mike Reyes appreciated the world-building the third film in this action franchise performed, expanding the lore and adding intrigue beyond the bullets. He wasn’t alone either, as IGN’s Jim Vejvoda also enjoyed the fleshing out of John Wick’s backstory and of course the gleefully violent action. Jim gave the film 8.5 and said:

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum brings the title character back to his roots while also offering new twists to where things could go from here, all with the over-the-top, brutally executed action set-pieces fans have come to expect from the franchise. They will not leave disappointed.

The John Wick franchise made its name on its incredible action and thus fans have come to expect that the ante will be upped each time out. On that account, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum looks like it delivers. In his 9 out of 10 review, Slashfilm’s Chris Evangelista went so far as to call it an “action masterpiece”:

John Wick 3 is a bone-cracking, horse-kicking, dog-biting, book-smashing, ax-throwing action masterpiece.

The word ‘epic’ gets thrown around a lot, but ‘masterpiece’ still carries an air of exclusivity and import. But having great action isn’t enough for everyone, it actually might be too much. In one of the few less enthusiastic reviews thus far, Variety’s Andrew Barker lamented that the action is action for its own sake and not in service to any deeper purpose. He said:

But as masterfully executed as the action is, watching two-plus hours of mayhem without any palpable dramatic stakes, or nuance, or any emotion at all save bloodlust offers undeniably diminishing returns. There are only so many times you can see a bullet pass through a skull before it gets deadening, and then almost dull.

For some, there is a desensitization to John Wick’s kills in the film and a lack of investment in the action because of a lack of stakes and emotion. There is something to be said for a franchise knowing what it is, what its goals are and delivering on them though and that’s what The Hollywood Reporter’s John DeFore highlights in his review:

An epic of choreographed mayhem that expands the Wickiverse in mostly pleasing ways, it is destined to satisfy fans of this surprise-hit franchise: If its ludicrous aspects bug you, what the hell are you doing here?

This was a common theme in the reviews. John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum isn’t reinventing the wheel. It is expanding the mythology of the previous films and delivering the beautifully brutal action fans of the franchise want and expect. That beautifully choreographed and shot action is what makes the film work, as Vox’s Alissa Wilkinson said in her 3.5 out of 5 review:

Whatever it lacks in narrative intelligence it makes up abundantly in visual moxie, and in a medium that is first and foremost visual, that’s what makes something great

Entertainment Weekly’s Chris Nashawaty echoed this sentiment and summed up what John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parbellum is and what it isn’t in his “A-“ review, saying:

I don’t mean to give the impression that John Wick 3 is anything grander than a gorgeously choreographed, gratuitously violent action movie. But as gorgeously choreographed, gratuitously violent action movies go, it’s high art.

All in all, the reviews for John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum give the impression that if you enjoyed the previous two films and like exploring this world and seeing Keanu Reeves’ character kill lots of people in cool and brutal ways, you’ll have a blast with this movie.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum opens in theaters on May 17. Check out our 2019 Release Schedule to keep track of all of the big movies arriving this summer.

Samuel L. Jackson Reveals Why Nick Fury Hasn't Brought Up Captain Marvel Before

Samuel L. Jackson Reveals Why Nick Fury Hasn't Brought Up Captain Marvel Before
NIck Fury turning to dust in Avengers: Infinity war

While all hope seemed lost following the end of Avengers: Infinity War, the post-credits scene gave us all hope when Nick Fury was able to get a message off to Captain Marvel. While this made fans very excited for the upcoming, and now soon to release Captain Marvel movie, it did raise one question. "You're calling her NOW?" It seemed like there had been some times in the past that a hero like Carol Danvers would have been useful, but Samuel L. Jackson says all those other problems the Earth has seen were no big deal compared to this one. According to Jackson...

She said only in emergencies. Other emergencies could be handled by the people who were present. It’s just an alien invasion, that’s something that could be handled. Half the population wasn’t dying and flicking off and doing whatever. We finally have an emergency that I feel warrants her presence. This is unprecedented. How are you gonna fight that? I can’t fight that. If I’m not here, I need to find someone to come here who can handle it. All those people are ineffective. They’re great for normal, everyday world disaster. But intergalactic badass who has all the Infinity Stones needs a bit more.

Clearly, Nick Fury has a very specific definition of "emergency" and even alien invasions and A.I. gone mad doesn't actually qualify. It certainly makes some sense. Fury's plan to create "The Avenger Initiative" comes at a point after the events of Captain Marvel so clearly, Fury isn't looking to call in his new friend at the first sign of something normal humans can't handle. He's planning on using others for those problems.

At the end of Avengers: Infinity War, it doesn't seem that Nick Fury is really clear on exactly what is going on, but he knows that Earth's Mightiest Heroes are dealing with it, and when people start to turn to dust, he knows they've failed. At that point, the only option left is to grab your pager.

Samuel L. Jackson's opinion on why he never called Danvers before isn't the only one that makes sense. Director Anna Boden tells IGN that Fury likely didn't want to reveal her existence to the world unless it was necessary. Her co-director Ryan Fleck says Fury was probably considering pushing the panic button ion the first Avengers, but eventually decided against it.

By the time things escalate to the actual alien invasion, if the Avengers can't do the job, it's probably not going to matter too much.

On the plus side, Fury was right, and the Avengers were able to handle all threats prior to Infinity War. If the Earth had been invaded by aliens, Fury probably would have really wished he'd used that pager.

Expect said pager to play a small role in Captain Marvel, as we'll probably learn where it came from. Assuming it works, we'll see the results of pressing that button when Avengers: Endgame comes out in a couple months.

All James Bond Movies In Order: From Sean Connery To Daniel Craig

All James Bond Movies In Order: From Sean Connery To Daniel Craig
Sean Connery as James Bond in Dr. No

Long before the MCU, Harry Potter, and the Star Wars franchises, there was Bond, James Bond. The one and only 007, licensed to kill. For almost 6 decades, the British super-spy James Bond has lit up the silver screen.

Six different actors have portrayed the cold-blooded killer willing do anything for Queen and Country: Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig have all put their own unique twist on the character over an incredible 24 (soon to be 25) films. This is the full list of James Bond movies in order with a little bit of information about the 25th due in 2020.

In the interest of full disclosure from the top, this is a complete list of all the official James Bond movies in order that have been produced by Eon Pictures starting in 1962. You won’t see David Niven or Barry Nelson on this list, nor does Never Say Never Again fit in anywhere. If you want to argue whether those should be included (they shouldn’t), feel free to do so in the comments. This also isn't a ranking, you can find that here.

The Sean Connery Era

Dr. No (1962)

Dr. No. The one that started it all. In it, James Bond, played by Sean Connery, is sent by MI6 to Jamaica to investigate the death of a station chief in Kingston. While in Jamaica, fans of the series are introduced to Felix Lieter, Bond’s counterpart in the CIA and a character that would recur in the series frequently. Bond also meets Honey Ryder, played by the incomparable Ursula Andrews, the first official “Bond Girl.”

After meeting, Bond and Honey are kidnapped and taken to a secret lair where the villain Dr. No meets with other SPECTRE members to discuss their latest plans to take over the world. Of course, 007 foils the plot and saves the day and gets the girl. As the series was based on the novels by Ian Fleming, many of the tropes that have become ingrained in the series are already a part of it in the very first film, like the girls, the booze and the arch villains.

From Russia With Love (1963)

The second film on the list of James Bond movies is From Russia With Love, also starring Sean Connery as James Bond. Released just one year after Dr. No, From Russia With Love continued to introduce fans to all the iconic pieces of the franchise. For the first time, fans met the head of Q branch, played by the legendary Desmond Llewelyn, a role he would play in an incredible 17 Bond films over the years.

The plot takes Bond from London to Istanbul to Belgrade to Venice as he fights the evil SPECTRE alongside Bond Girl Tatiana Romanova, played by Daniela Bianchi. From Russia With Love also introduces Ernst Blofeld as SPECTRE's “Number 1.” Blofeld would go on to be single most iconic Bond villain, appearing in five movies and played by five different actors.

Goldfinger (1964)

Continuing the run of releasing a movie a year, 1964 brought Goldfinger. When ranked, this film probably comes out on top the James Bond movie list most often. That's saying a lot considering how long it's been since its release and all the content that's followed.

Featuring an iconic theme song sung by Shirley Bassey, an iconic villain in Auric Goldfinger, an iconic Bond Girl with the most famous of names, Pussy Galore, played by Honor Blackmon, and an iconic henchman in Oddjob, Goldfinger is, to say the least, iconic. James Bond travels from London to Miami to Kentucky chasing the supervillain Goldfinger and in the end, saves the day when he foils Goldfinger's plan to rob Fort Knox.

Thunderball (1965)

Released just 14 months after Goldfinger, Thunderball might have the campiest opening of any of the Connery James Bond movies, with Bond escaping while using a jet pack. It’s about as silly as Connery’s version would ever get, though it still falls well behind Moore’s general silliness.

Bond takes on the supervillain Emilio Largo as he attempts to steal nuclear bombs on behalf of SPECTRE with help from his mistress, Bond Girl Domino, played by Claudine Auger. Nearly two decades, Warner Bros delivered a second adaptation of the original Thunderball novel, with Sean Connery playing Bond once more. So Connery has the distinction of getting to perform in two different versions of one spy tale.

You Only Live Twice (1967)

Filmed mostly in Japan, You Only Live Twice was supposed Sean Connery’s final Bond movie, and it would be, at least for a little while. He resigned halfway through filming, announcing that he would not return in the next film.

This classic was somewhat controversial because children’s author Roald Dahl was chosen to be the screenwriter, as well as the decision to make Bond look and "talk" Japanese in a somewhat racist scene that has Sean Connery essentially in "yellow-face." It also features the... interestingly named Bond Girl “Kissy Suzuki” and once again, James Bond tangles with his old foe Ernst Blofeld, played this time by the great Donald Pleasence.

The George Lazenby Era

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969)

For the first time on the screen, Sean Connery was not the star of a James Bond movie. After Connery announced he was leaving, the producers went on a search for the next Bond. They landed on Australian George Lazenby, and they offered him a seven picture deal. Lazenby's agent famously told him that he thought the franchise wouldn’t last into the '70s and he didn’t want him to be tied to it for long, so he only made the deal for the one film, and that would come back to haunt both of them.

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service tends to get a bad rap from some fans, but it’s actually a pretty great James Bond movie with everything a fan should want. Blofeld is back, this time played by the legendary Telly Savalas. The Bond Girl, Tracy, played by Diana Riggs, actually becomes Mrs. James Bond in the movie. George Lazenby has a little more of an edge to his version of Bond, and this one of the darker films in the series.

The Sean Connery Era 2.0

Diamonds Are Forever (1971)

Sean Connery is back! After George Lazenby’s one-film deal expired, Eon and United Artists went all out to get the beloved Connery back. Charles Gray, who played an ambassador to Japan and friend of Bond’s in You Only Live Twice, also returned to the series in Diamonds Are Forever, this time as the evil Ernst Blofeld.

There were not one, but two “Bond Girls,” both with classic names: Tiffany Case and Plenty O’Toole, played by Jill St. John and Lana Wood, respectively. Also, for the first and only time, gambling legend James Bond visits Las Vegas, where he dines at the… Circus Circus? Oh well.

The Roger Moore Era

Live And Let Die (1973)

For just the second time, Sean Connery wasn’t in the starring role in the newest James Bond movie. Roger Moore became Bond and he would go on to make the role truly his own, playing it much campier and looser (and less edgy) than both Connery and George Lazenby had before him. Live And Let Die marked a big change in the franchise as Moore was likely to be playing the role for a while. Not only did he play the role different but the tone of the movies changed to match it. The characters became a little more over the top, as did the stories.

Live And Let Die has one of the most bizarre stories as the producers attempted to cash in on the Blaxploitation genre that was popular at the time. Although Yaphet Kotto is excellent in the two roles he plays as the villains, the whole thing is rather bizarre. Jane Seymour is one of the best to every play a Bond Girl though, as Solitaire.

The Man With The Golden Gun (1974)

James Bond returned the next year in The Man With The Golden Gun, starring Roger Moore once again. The titular character, named Francisco Scaramanga, is an assassin with James Bond’s name on one of his golden bullets (literally). He is played by the great Christopher Lee and his main henchman was the iconic Nick Nack, played by the legendary Herve Villechaize.

Maud Adams makes her first appearance in a James Bond movie as Andrea Anders, and once again, there is a classic Bond Girl character name – Britt Ekland plays Mary Goodnight. So yeah, there are definitely enough familiar elements in this movie.

The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)

The Spy Who Loved Me is the tenth James Bond movie in just 15 years. This one has everything a Bond fan could want: a classic villain in Curd Jurgens as Stromberg, a stunning Bond Girl in Barbara Bach as Triple X (eat your heart out, Vin Diesel) and maybe the most infamous henchman of all time, Richard Kiel as Jaws.

It also happens to feature an amazing theme by Carly Simon. One fun fact about The Spy Who Loved Me is that Bond producer Albert “Cubbie” Broccoli first approached Steven Spielberg to direct it, but he turned them down as he was in post-production on Jaws (the movie, not the henchman).

Moonraker (1979)

Moonraker has the dubious distinction of consistently being at or near the bottom of the list when the James Bond movies are ranked. The truth behind it may explain some of the problems. The plot is ridiculous. It’s James Bond in space. And since it’s a Roger Moore film, it’s already pretty campy even before they even get to space. That was a terrible idea, but it was also a rushed one, which made it worse.

Originally the follow-up to The Spy Who Loved Me was supposed to For Your Eyes Only. Instead, the producers changed gears on the heels of the massive success of Star Wars in 1977 and put super-spy James Bond an astronaut in space. It wasn’t a good decision. It did mark the return of Richard Kiel as Jaws though, and Moonraker also features the most ridiculous Bond Girl name of the entire series – Dr. Holly Goodhead, played by Lois Chiles.

For Your Eyes Only (1981)

James Bond entered his third decade on the screen with For Your Eyes Only, and while it still was a trademark Roger Moore-era movie, with humor and over-the-top moments, it was a return to good ideas and good movie-making after the disaster that was Moonraker. It opens with James standing at his late wife Tracy’s grave. It’s the only time in the whole series she is referred to, outside of On Her Majesty’s Request.

Shortly after that, James finds himself on a helicopter be remotely controlled by none other than his old nemesis, Ernst Blofeld, who is in a wheelchair and whom Bond eventually deposits down a smokestack as the opening credits role. Classic. Also – keep a sharp eye out for Tywin Lannister himself, Charles Dance, from Game Of Thrones, who plays one of the baddies chasing Bond in Italy.

Octopussy (1983)

Yep, this one is usually most famous for its name. Somehow, it got past the censors and ended up with a PG rating. Octopussy was released the same year the rival James Bond movie Never Say Never Again, with Sean Connery returning the role, as mentioned earlier.

Octopussy won the box office race and Never Say Never Again was sort of ignored by most Bond fans other than as a curiosity. Octopussy is also the only Bond movie filmed in India, which makes it worth the watch alone. It saw James Bond being tasked with following a general who is stealing treasures from the Soviet Union, but it eventually turns into a race to stop the detonation of a nuclear weapon.

A View To A Kill (1985)

A View To A Kill was the 14th James Bond movie of the series as well as the seventh, and final, for Roger Moore’s career as 007. Moore is still the highest tally among all the actors that have played James Bond. The thing that stands out the most in this mid-'80s romp is, by far, Christopher Walken’s turn as the blonde-haired supervillain Max Zorin.

His goal is to cause an earthquake that wipes northern California off the map while he rides around on a blimp with his name on it. The one of a kind Grace Jones takes a turn as both a Bond Girl and a henchperson in this as the intense May Day. The plot and the movie are the epitome of over-the-top camp that defined the Roger Moore era.

The Timothy Dalton Era

The Living Daylights (1987)

When Roger Moore retired as 007, the odds on favorite to replace him was Remington Steele star Pierce Brosnan. Eventually though, Brosnan would be locked into his contract for the show and the producers went with Timothy Dalton as the star of The Living Daylights. The way Dalton played James Bond was a big departure from Moore. He played him with more an edge, a tougher, more realistic,\ and angrier Bond.

Over the years, Dalton’s Bond has gained more prominence among fans, but initially it was panned. Also of note, Joe Don Baker plays a villain in the movie, but he would return in the Brosnan era as a CIA agent named Jake Wade. It should also be noted that The Living Daylights marked the return of Bond's classic car, the Aston Martin, and would also be the last movie to use the title from an Ian Fleming story until 2006's Casino Royale.

Licence To Kill (1989)

The second and final James Bond movie for Timothy Dalton is one of the most under-appreciated films of the series, Licence to Kill (yes, we're going with the British spelling here). It continued exploring the darker and more violent side of 007, which really played to Dalton’s strengths.

One very notable thing about the cast, the henchman Dario is played by a very young Benicio del Toro in one of his very first roles. Carrie Lowell, later of Law & Order fame plays the Bond Girl. Felix Leiter also came back for another round of action, and he wouldn't be seen on the big screen again until Casino Royale.

The Pierce Brosnan Era

GoldenEye (1995)

Due to financial and legal wrangling, Licence To Kill would be the last James Bond movie for six years, and in the intervening time, a lot of major changes happened Arguably the biggest was the producers (now including Barbara Broccoli, taking over for her father) landing the guy they wanted back in the '80s, Pierce Brosnan, to play the British secret agent.

His first movie, GoldenEye, was a huge hit as the public was excited about the first Bond movie in years AND that Bronsnan finally had the role many thought he should have had years before. Another major change was the role of M. For years, the role was played by Bernard Lee, then in the '80s, by Robert Brown. For GoldenEye, the producers would cast a woman in the role, Dame Judi Dench, who would go on to make the role all her own. The big villain in this is also a Game Of Thrones alum, Sean Bean.

Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)

Tomorrow Never Dies is most notable for its cast. The villain is played by yet another future Game Of Thrones star, Jonathan Pryce and Teri Hatcher plays the Bond Girl. The late magician and actor Ricky Jay plays one of Pryce’s henchman.

Eagle-eyes viewers can also pick up two future Downton Abbey collaborators, Hugh Bonneville and Julian Fellowes, in small roles as well as a young Gerald Butler in a small role as a British sailor. As for the story, it revolves around James Bond trying to prevent World War III from unfolding. So, you know, an average weekday for him.

The World Is Not Enough (1999)

One of the most universally panned James Bond movie, The World Is Not Enough suffers from a weak plot (the story sees James Bond protecting the daughter of a recently-assassinated billionaire) and a weak acting performance from Bond Girl Denise Richards, despite her excellently silly Bond Girl name, Dr. Christmas Jones.

Robert Carlyle is excellent as the villain and this film also marks the first appearance of John Cleese as “R.” Sadly, it would be the last James Bond movie for Desmond Llewelyn as Q. Llewelyn was killed in a traffic accident shortly after the movie was released.

Die Another Day (2002)

Die Another Day marked the final James Bond movie with Pierce Brosnan as 007. It is probably most famous for Halle Barry’s appearance as the Bond Girl Jinx Johnson and her scene that recreated Honey Ryder’s famous scene in Dr. No when she walks out of the ocean in a bikini. That scene served as a tribute to the entire series, which was celebrating its 40th anniversary.

It also marked the first time the series starred John Cleese as Q, the first time the role was played by someone other than Desmond Llewelyn. Madonna also plays a small role in the film, in addition to providing the theme song.

The Daniel Craig Era

Casino Royale (2006)

2006’s Casino Royale was the first major reboot of the James Bond film series. It restarted the timeline and it starts with new Bond star, Daniel Craig, as a newbie “Double O” which M, still played by Judi Dench, is hesitant that the correct decision was made by promoting him and granting him a license to kill.

The reboot, by almost any measure, was a huge success as critics and fans praised Craig for the gritty realism with which he played the role. Casino Royale also introduces the wonderful Jeffery Wright as old Bond’s old CIA buddy, Felix Leiter.

Quantum Of Solace (2008)

Quantum Of Solace, the second Daniel Craig film, was a bit of a disappointment on the heels of Casino Royale. It features a rather forgettable villain, played by Mathieu Amalric and a rather forgettable Bond Girl, played by Olga Kurylenko.

But, there is another Bond Girl in the film with another classically silly name – Strawberry Fields, portrayed by actress Gemma Arterton. Judi Dench and Jeffery Wright reprised their usual roles as well. Something to look out for – directors Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso CuarĂ³n both make cameos in the film.

Skyfall (2012)

After more behind-the-scenes financial issues, mostly having to do with money problems for MGM, which owned the rights to the James Bond films, it took four years to get Skyfall made. But the wait was worth it, as it was one of the very best in the whole series. Just for starters, the theme song by Adele is fantastic, and it deservedly won an Oscar for Best Song.

Javier Bardem plays the villain and the film introduced a new, younger Q in keeping with the rebooted series, played by Ben Whishaw. Ralph Fiennes as makes his first appearance in a Bond movie as Gareth Mallory, a member of Parliament that oversees MI6. In one of the most emotional moments in the entire series, Judi Dench, as M, dies in the arms of James Bond.

Spectre (2015)

What’s a good reboot without the re-introduction of a classic villain? In the James Bond world, that can only mean one person and one organization, Ernst Blofeld and SPECTRE.

For the first time since the 1970s, The Joker to James Bond’s Batman was back in this Sam Mendes-directed film. In this take, Christoph Waltz puts his spin on the character as the 5th actor to play the role. While the Spectre is not perfect, the opening sequence alone, shot in Mexico City, is worth the price of admission. Also, it marks Ralph Fiennes' Gareth Mallory making his first full appearance as M, as his career transition happened at the end of Skyfall.

Bond 25 (2020)

Production has just begun for the 25th installment of this unstoppable series. In all likelihood it will mark the end of the Daniel Craig era as he has said it will be his last. Not much else is known about it, except that Rami Malek will star as the villain; other newcomers include Ana de Armas, David Dencik and Lashana Lynch; and the familiar faces returning include Ralph Fiennes, Naomi Harris, Rory Kinnear, Lea Seydoux, Ben Whishaw and Jeffrey Wright.

We can’t wait to see what is in store for the cinema’s greatest secret agent. Let's just hope that Daniel Craig's recent injury isn't very serious and the film stays on its timeline.

So there it is. The entire list of (soon to be) James Bond movies in order. 25 films in a remarkable franchise that continues to find audiences, both new and old after an amazing 57 years. What will the future hold? No one knows for sure, but it’s a safe bet that James Bond isn’t close to retirement, at least not on screen.
